Probably better off in a different forum, but i'm reluctant to venture out of the mini environment.

I drove back from gatwick, along M25 and down the M3 last night. At 70mph, i'm being passed by a lot of traffic, but i thought the M25 was littered with speed cameras, infact i thought this was increasingly true of all motorways. Even when the 60mph restriction was lit, other traffic was still exceeding that speed. What is the score with speed cameras on the motorway?

Also, does anyone know what those white dots are, about 0.5m across, which you see in a line, one in each carriageway?

I had heard the same rumours. However, I (and most people I know) speed on the M25 regularly, and have never heard of anyone ever getting a speeding ticket there.

If you are talking about the white squares, you will find that they represent a set distance for plod to time you between to work out your average speed. There will be sets 1/4 or 1/2 mile apart (or whatever they set them at).

The main set of cameras on the M25 is in the variable limit section between the M3 and the M4 (approx - the zone extends either side of the junctions but I'm not sure how far).

Anyway, I travel that route quite regularly and SOME of the cameras ARE live - as confirmed by my Snooper. But many of them are not switched on. They are supposedly controlled by the variable speed limits with a short period of time between the speed limit changing and the camera trigger speed changing. I don't know whether they are old film-based cameras or newer digital ones. If they use film, I would bet it runs out pretty quickly given the volume of traffic that goes through.

Edited to add: the locations of the live cameras do vary so just because it's not active today, don't assume that it won't be tomorrow!

I've never seen a speed camera anticlockwise from the A3 to the M1, however after the M1 back down to the A3 especially in the variable bit it's infested with them!
