When did mp3 playback compatibility find its way into 997s?

Not talking about iPod or aux connections, but the ability to read mp3s straight off a CD in the head unit...? I'm lead to believe it was late 2005/early 06 cars onwards.

Can anyone here confirm this and if there any visible differences to such head units? Finally, can compatibility be added with software updates on older units?

It would not be a software update - the hardware is very different in a player which can decompress and decode mp3

Yes, but I thought it might be possible that the hadware is present but not 'activated' in some way. I know this would be a bit silly but stranger things have happened...

Well assuming that you could 'install' or 'upgrade' to play MP3s like PC software versions, I'm fairly certain that the cost would be so prohibitive that it would be easier to find a 2nd hand PCM with MP3 already enabled than to have yours upgraded...
