Help. I get more confussed the more I ask

Got my Cayman 2008 model. Very disapoointed with the power, but love the looks, handling

I ve been looking at 997T or 996TS but now Im looking at Cayman R (about £40k)

Are they any good?

Yes, they are very good and whilst 330 bhp is more than a 2008 Cayman it won't blow your socks off.

This might though ...

A 500 bhp Cayman would be a very different experience. Not sure if the internals would be OK for serious track work but road use should be fine.

says it all, to quote:

"The Porsche Cayman R has emerged triumphant in Autocar’s annual Britain’s Best Driver’s Car comparison for 2011. Of the 11 cars on test, it was the Cayman R’s completeness and ruthless efficiency, which stood out for the six judges, no mean feat considering that last year’s winner – the Porsche 911 GT3 RS - was also a contender."

Yeah, they're good.

Just not quite as good as a Spyder.

Yes, they are absolutely awesome; doubt you'll find a single Cayman R (present or past) that doesn't rate them as one of the best.

but is it ? (the new boxster has less power slower to 100mph and is nearly 0.5 sec slower 50-70mph in 5th) and until i see a back to back test by an unbias not on the payroll journo i would beg to differ!

How do power or acceleration stats affect handling?

The OP was disappointed with the power not the handling of a Gen I Cayman.
Thanks to the Spyder massive we seem to have gone off piste.
A Spyder or CR is not a massively better handling car to a Gen I Cayman, neither is it massively more powerful.
So gents and ladies, what would be the options?

Drove both the Spyder and Cayman R round Porsche Centre Silverstone's handling track.
The Cayman R trounced it. The others agreed.

Sublime handling car.

Cayman r feels like a toy compared to the turbos... Shouldn't be compared to each other.... If you want it as a pure weekend and occasional track car then maybe consider it.. But if that's the criteria a spyder or 6gt3 would b my choice.

Got to agree with this. I've tried a cayman R and thought it absolutely fab but at the same time just a little boring. Not a boring car, just so damn accomplished that on the road she was just so capable of going so quick easily that I really risked losing my licence enjoying it. Easily doing 1.2 leptons and at times not realising it and was just starting to enjoy myself.
Seriously quick motor and ideal for B roads, well B roads without scamera vans, gatsos, plod and traffic that is.
Ill stick to me old aircooled and go half the speed, enjoy it just as much and have a little more chance of keeping my licence. :-)

This is so true, mate of mine has a 7.2 GT3 which I have driven quite a lot and it is massively capable and hugely fast but too fast for the road if you want to wring its neck. I have a 2.9 Cayman and do not feel short changed in the slightest. I get to rev it hard in the lower gears, hear all those wonderful Porsche induction and exhaust noises without getting to silly speeds. I also find it gives me more capacity to drive in a more flowing way as I am not wiping huge speeds off for corners. I'm not saying that a GT3 or other uber fast Porsche is useless because they are all bloody fantastic, its just that I like to feel I am using the cars performance as much as possible without constantly reigning it in for fear of safety or licence. Cayman R would be plenty as would any 981 IMO.

Of course they are good. Very good. The problem for them is that you can get a 996 GT3 for the same money or a nice enough earlier Cayman S for half that (or a similar vintage one for 25% less than the R). As a value proposition both of those completely undermine the R, but if it turns out to be the right car for you then you probably won't care. The bottom line is that you are going to have to test drive and decide for yourself - the internet can't really help in this case as these cars have a massive impartiality shortfall amongst owners.

To the op if you had the old 2.7 cayman, then yes the R is a lot faster and you will be happy with it and not be wanting more Bhp.
If you want to do 120mph+ then yes you start to need more Bhp, so I guess it depends if you live in Germany.

There will always be differing opinions on any car forum.

I think it would be fairly easy to arrange a few extended test drives of the cars you are interested in and I don't think it will take long for you to decide which car is right for you.

Lets face it, the are arguements of why you should pick any of the cars mentioned and they are all great in their own way.
