MK5 Golf - Exhaust system light has come on....
Discussion
Sounds like a DPF problem assuming its a diesel, agree with the above that you should get a diagnostic check done first and also see what the soot level is in the DPF, the reading you get will determine what action needs to be taken i.e. a simple static regeneration or something more complex.
Also does the glow plug light flash as well and is there any loss in power?

Not all diesels have a dpf. I have no idea if the op's has or not.
Edited. Would a diesel without a dpf have an exhaust warning light?
Highly unlikely. I personally have never seen an exhaust light on a car without a DPF.Edited. Would a diesel without a dpf have an exhaust warning light?

It's true not all diesels have DPF's, but I'd be surprised if a mk5 Golf doesn't.

I thought that would probably be the case, I was thinking out loud really. I recently bought a 09 diesel that is without a dpf which was a nice surprise, but if I'd of had the choice between a dpf or an M32 gearbox I'd choose the dpf every time.
