What TV (around 50in)?
Discussion
Hi folks,
Finally looking to get a decent TV. Have been keeping my ear to the ground and I know that Panasonic plasmas are the PH favourite but I am always worried by stories of problems with them. I gather LED TVs have caught up and use less power, work better in bright light, smaller bezel, etc.
Anyway, have worked out we need something 50-55in as we have a long thin room and are sitting about 4.5m from the screen. It's south facing and the light would be coming in from the left as you view.
Don't want something that's going to take over the room, but equally don't want to be cursing that it's too small.
Budget is a grand although could go a tad over for the perfect telly. Not worried about 3D but smart TV/WiFi features would be good, and at least one scart input. Free view required, freeway useful. Decent menu system!
Am I right in thinking Panasonic, Samsung & LG are the makes to look for?
Prefer to buy from JL or Richer Sounds.

PM me, and i'll fill you in to the myths and legends that surround Plasma TVs
and supply you with a set..Not that it's massively relevant if you are buying now, but Panasonic have recently announced the end of Plasma production so the 2013 models will be the last available.
LED typically copes better with high ambient light, and uses less power. Personally I prefer the slightly softer and more natural (to my eyes) picture of a plasma. There is no reason to be scared of a plasma TV, most of the horror stories regarding regassing, short life, screen burn etc were made up by people who didn't know what they were talking about. There is a slight risk of screen burn/image retention on modern sets if you have no common sense.
Most manufacturers are in the process of switching from 2012 to 2013 models, so you could either get the latest and greatest or there could be some good deals on end of life models.

Actually they said they're considering ending plasma development at the end of 2013, which means there will be a 2014 range of plasmas LED typically copes better with high ambient light, and uses less power. at the very least, also it also hinges on whether they can offer OLED sets at a reasonable cost. so it's not cut and dried yet, who knows
if the Koreans actually decide to start fighting again then you can bet your bottom dollar that the LG and Samsung manufacturing plants
will be on the target list, if that happened it would hand the TV market back to the Japanese.
50GT60 just been reviewed by AVForums. Gets a fantastic review!

Looking seriously at the 50vt50b now but slightly concerned by reports of problems - banding, a 50hz bug, and "dynamic false contouring", whatever one of those is!
I actually bought one of these a few weeks ago to replace my old Pioneer plasma which threw in the towel after 9 years. Fantastic telly, great HD picture and plenty of socketry to plug all your other toys into...a very enthusiastic thumbs up talkssense said:

We have had our panny plasma vierra now for nearly 10 years & it's as good as new, sometimes i wish it would go belly up to warrant a new one, Shame to hear that Panasonic are ceasing their plasma production, i much prefer Plasma to LCDLED typically copes better with high ambient light, and uses less power.
