Been researching, went off to Saxton today, then Land Rover in Barnet and then Guildford.....

There are a lack of Disco 3s......

I did have my head turned by a very nice new Defender 90 XS .......

Choices...

Spec a new 90 and keep it forever for 30k ish (always wanted one)

Up budget to 30k and get a really nice Disco3 HSE or even Disco 4 on low spec.....(is the Disco 4 much better?)

Or is 20k sufficient and get the high mileage Disco3HSE

I am genuinely really really torn.

Car will replace M3 as everyday car. Probably do 5000 miles a year on long 4 hour journeys. 3000miles a year towing to circuits and another 2k a year around town......

Genuinely, all options have great merits......help!

Go for the high mileage one, stick some of the cash in a slush fund and run it until it falls apart!

I was sort of in this situation a couple of years ago.

Had about £20k-25k to spend.

Started looking at 110 Utility's then quickly realised for the same sort of money, I could sit in far more comfort in a Disco 3.

If it was my money, firstly, I wouldn't spend £30k on a Defender. Secondly, due to your occasional long distance driving, I'd be looking at a Disco 3 at <£20k like camel says. I'm sure you can pick something decent up for that price (I refuse to look, as I will end up getting itchy feet again).

If you are spending £20k+, I'd be wanting a Disco 4. How about converting a low mileage commercial?

Thanks Woody, what do you mean by converting a low mileage commercial?

A commercial has all of the same fittings as a regular car but with all the seats taken out and large board put in. In theory, you should be able to take the board out and convert it to a 7x seater with parts from a scrap yard.

Dunno about any legalities, V5 stuff, etc...

I collected mine yesterday: 08 plate Disco3 TDV6 HSE, 78k miles and under £20k.

It's going to take weeks to find out if everything works...but I can watch TV in it while I do so.

Have heard a few bad stories about Saxton's,

There isn't a HSE D4 for your budget. You're looking at earlier ones with higher miles, or later examples with lower miles.

Check the LR approved stock and see if anything there is to your liking.

Chaps - just wanted to reply to say thanks for the help....

I put a deposit down today on a 48k Disco 3 HSE in Buck Blue on a 59 plate.

It's not immaculate but I'm realistic.... And I did see it pre preparation.

It's a main dealer car with a year warranty and they've offered me a decent part ex on the M3.....

So, I'm sorted I think! Just need a tow bar fitted and I'm rocking.

I'll miss the performance of the M3 but hopefully going back to racing will make up for that!

Make sure you extend the warranty when the dealer one runs out. winkbeer

yes - definitely! It was a tough choice coming from the all singing and dancing M3, hence why I have spent more than I was going to for lower mileage and newer.

I figured as it's a keep, get a good one to start out, and then let me be the one that wrecks it!

It has a full service history, and the dealer are doing a service now before I pick it up.

I'm really looking forward to the change of pace.............the fact I can easily get the bikes in the back, and tow the little boat I share with my mate in Devon. Obviously towing the track/race car without hassle. It's big enough to sleep in the back.

All good!

Watch this space for a 'what two seater shall I get to go with my Landy' when I've saved up again!

Excellent.

I'm loving mine - and can live with the 27mpg I'm seeing so far. Are you going to stick with the removable towbar or fit a fixed one?

I'm just in discussions about that. The removable tow bar isn't standard is it? As mine apparently doesn't have one?

Not standard and apparently not a good solution for regular towing. From what I've read on the Disco3 forum there's a very good setup available from Tow Trust for a fraction of the cost of the LR ones; have a shufty at this thread.

On the one hand, if your car isn't fitted for towing then presumably the previous owner(s) didn't tow with it, so the mounting slot should be unworn: on the other the LR bar is bloody expensive and only fit for occasional use.

thanks Ironingman - I've just checking up what they are fitting exactly. It'll probably be used for towing about 2 times a month.

surely it's man enough for that?

I intend to use mine to pull the hillclimb car - 1,000kg on a Brian James A-Series, so about 1,500kg total - probably twenty journeys a year, but keep tabs on any wear in the fitting slot and upgrade to the Tow Trust fixed bar at the first hint of a problem.

The dealer I bought it from threw in the removable bar and the towing electrics as part of the deal - neither were fitted to the car as it stood: I think the only thing I wouldn't do is spend LR money (upwards of £300) on a new removable bar.

and the rest mate - i'm quoted nearly 700 I think including VAT

although they said they will pay half of that.......

I've got an email out to find out which tow bar type that is.........

I reckon half that will be the wiring loom, which you'll need whichever way you go?

I hope so........I'm a bit dubious sometimes on the costs with something like this.

Just checked - it's 625 + 125 VAT ........but they are knocking money off price of the car etc......

Checked the website, a new Disco4 extra of a towbar is listed at 510........
