I haven't been for a few years but as it's the 25th anniversary of the show I thought I'd go this year. Is anyone else heading for Essen next week?

I'm there already and some of the cars here include Daytona spider, pre war Aston, Espada, numerous Porsches, Jaguar XKs, etc, etc.

I'm surprised at how few people have said they are going; on here, on a classic car forum and from the various clubs across Europe that I've contacted.

I shall be there within an hour - breakfast first!

Just back. Phew, it doesn't get any less exhausting.
Show up to the usual standards with so many million pound Mercs that you start taking them for granted.
Where it does keep improving is the weirdies. Loved that Autobleu 750 MM streamliner horror on the Movendi stand and the supercharged Fiat Barchetta with the Stanguellini-esque chrome strakes.
Still reeling from the bonkers prices being asked in the car corrals, though.
I've put my report and photos on-line. Not sure what the protocol is over linking to it, but it anyone objects, feel free to remove the link.

Second year there, and utterly blown away again.
So many 300SL Gullwings, you're sick of the sight of them? Check.
Every possible form of 911, in pairs? Check.
Utterly wonderful things you've never seen nor heard of, again in there seemingly in multiples? Check.
XJ220s, Veyrons, Enzos, F1 cars, sharing exhibition space with Mk1 Sierra 1.6 GLs? Check.
Umpteen million Citroen DS'? Check.
Wonderfully efficiency German organisation and friendly, smiling natives? Check.

God I love this show. People of Pistonheads, if you've so much as a microgram of petrol in your veins, you -must- go to this show, even just once. It just beggars belief.

Have no fears re. getting there, getting around etc. Everything from the park-n-ride to buying the obligatory bratwurst is a breeze, with no language barrier. Not that it matters, as the Germans are wonderful, helpful and kind people. Dare I say it's less faff than any UK event?

Personal highlight? The Alfa Romeo stand, looking at the Guillia Cloverleaf. Next thing I know I'm being given the keys to a Mito for an unaccompanied test drive and told "go wherever you like...we're at Hall 1 if you get lost" biggrin

Got back last night and as above..........EXCELLENT show.

Also as above Alfe Romeo stand was my personal fave due to them displaying just about

as many TZ ,33 , and Zagato stuff they could cram in.

Many many pics taken, wait for those.

Rough diary of weekend.

Dover ferry leaves 9.20pm
Depart Calais 11.50pm
Arrive Essen 4am......drove non stop apart from a stop to pee
Walk to Messe Essen for 9am opening time after little sleep
Leave show at 2pm utterly exhausted
Arrive Calais for 8pm return, drove non stop
Home at 10pm.............
sleep

Oh and drove with the top down ALL the way.

Also at silly o clock somewhere in Belgium on the way there i was passed by a Nissan GTR.

He flashed his brakelights at me ,i think .

I don't know if he was greeting a fellow PHer or maybe it was a "follow me" as you are

about to go the wrong way signal but it was appreciated anyway.

About to dock at Dover on return trip. Astounding show, walked so far (had to see everything at least twice) I have a blistered foot. Highlights of the show: that little Fiat Barchetta that won the best unrestored car award was superb. Far too many outstanding cars to mention but perhaps the Vauxhall with the single dickey-seat, the '49 Bentley in Coys auction, the Riley Brooklands (well I would mention that, wouldn't I?)

It's about the twelfth time I've been and I've never been disappointed, this has to be the best yet.
