So, I've been browsing the Slooooooow Cooker thread, with a whole lot of salivation I might add!

In a few months time I've got a trip coming up where we'll be having a fire during the night.
Next day we're going to be in and out of the camp over the course of the morning/afternoon.

So what I'm wondering (I might just not have the right words for Googling) does anyone have any experience of stewing/cooking in general in the ashes of the night before?

I'm thinking getting a big cast iron pot (Basically a Dutch oven) and filling it with meaty/veggy goodness and submerging it in the remains of the fire for most of the day and hopefully it'll be done by the time we're ready to eat in the evening.

Does anyone have any advice/experience they can impart? There's a whole lot of stuff about cooking flat breads and so on in the ashes, but not much I can find about stews and so on. Obviously the ideal thing would be just go try some stuff out. However I don't have enough days between now and then where I can just spend it looking after a fire (Damn the day job! wink )

In before don't leave fires unattended and so on.

Looking forward to some tasty advice.
