Upgrading fuel pump, filter and pipework.

On the advice of John Eales I have upgraded the fuel pump and filter and gone braded hose. I am trying to work out how to get the filter in before the pump if possible.

If I have the filter before the pump does it need to be as low as the bottom of the fuel tank to prevent air lock on low fuel levels or will the pump suck the fuel through and therefore avoid air locks if the filter is higher than the fuel level IYSWIM?

Anyone done this and have pics as to where the filter and pump are positioned?
