I am waiting for my IVA date, and set about working out the logistics of getting final things done, like headlight adjustments etc, and getting it to and from IVA.

One of the issues is how to get the car to and from a garage for these bits and pieces if you don't have facilities yourself, and the cost and arrangements for trailoring becomes huge.

On enquiring with my local Garage which also does MOT's, the owner simply said ' why don't you drive it down for an MOT?', which was a surprise!

Yes I know I could drive it up for IVA, but I did not know you could drive an unregistered but insured vehicle to MOT, if later you are going for IVA?

If true, then that would be the most obvious answer, and the VOSA docs seem to support this:

"you can drive the vehicle before completing the registration
and licensing formalities are to and from a pre-arranged IVA and/or MoT test and to and from a garage
for remedial work following failure to pass the inspection. Other than in these situations, the vehicle
must not be used on the road until the licensing and registration formalities have been completed."

However (there is always one) - This para is in context with imported vehicles (or so it seems), so I am not sure it is valid for a self build, but then, I notice old threads where some used to do an MOT before SVA (and drive it there)just to have someone check the basics....

Anyone know the REAL situation?

I'm curious - cheers

I don't know the REAL situation, but how far are you talking about to get to your local garage and VOSA station?
I remember something about you can drive to and from providing the distance was reasonable. I would drive it to and from a local garage and trailer it to the test station.

Interesting! I've call VOSA and ask the question, Keith. I spoke to a very helpful chap there when I was looking for info on test waiting times, test regs for CarPCs, etc!

Driving to the IVA test is allowed.

Driving to an MOT test I would consider to be rather a grey area. Having said that I think you could argue the case with whoever stopped you.
I actually doubt you would be stopped as the paperwork involved would be a pain to the officer so they would likely look the other way and hope you cleared their patch ASAP.

It seems to be a very moot point, with no-one willing to give a definitive!

...Which is annoying!

They say that ignorance of the law is no excuse or defence, but if you go out of your way to try to get a true answer, and get nothing back, then????????????

Mark - you said you spoke to DVLA - did they give you anything on this? Its not clear in your post.

cheers

Sorry Keith, my crap typing! I meant to say "I'd call VOSA and ask", suggesting that if you call the number on the IVA site and speak to someone you might get a decent response. When I spoke to them, they were very helpful, but I didn't ask this particular question.

If you are definitely insured against killing or injuring someone then I would just go ahead and do what you like... It seems to be a fairly grey area... On the other hand , if you are NOT insured then there are no circumstances in which I would take the car onto the road - I would have it trailered ( which is what I did with mine)

At the end of the day, only you can decide what to do......

I hope that helps , but it probably doesn't smile

I am amazed to read all this. Don't you have professional plates in the UK used by garages to test drive vehicle or pick up non registered cars like an Ultima would be in this instance? We have them in Switzerland and if I recall in Germany too. Just wondering...

Yes - we do - but as you say, they are PROFESSIONAL plates, used by people in the motor trade - not available to be used by any casual car builder.....

When I built my Scamp, pre IVA days, the registration process involved getting an MOT then driving to your nearest VOSA station (20 miles away for me) where an "inspector" gave it a 5 minute look over (nothing was moved, jacked up, switched on or started up) and that was it! On the way home a police car followed me for a few miles but wasn't interested in stopping a car with no number plates!

I would imagine that even the casual car builders like us could have a friendly contact in the motor trade or a garage who would lend the plates for a couple of hours?

I suppose if the car was driven by the motor trader who owned the plates (and therefore the insurance) then it might be OK...
