My 1998 Defender TDI 300 has a broken rear diff assembly. Problem is the vehicle is in SW Cameroon where parts are not reliably available. I found a front diff assembly, could someone tell me if the assembly & bearings would fit the rear housing?

Hmmm.... There are quite a few combinations/permutations of rear diff on that car. If you don't already know what's fitted, you're probably going to be better off pulling it apart first to confirm what you need.

There are:

  • 2 or 4 pin.
  • Salisbury (which will be completely different!)
  • You also need to check the number of splines are on the diff vs half shafts.
If it's a standard 'Rover' diff, I think they're interchangeable (but not 100% sure).

Of course, the other way of doing it is to just drive in 2WD until you get somewhere with spares!

Remove half shafts, rear prop and stick it in diff-lock.

Just to remove one variable... if its a 110 then the rear will be a salisbury diff IIRC.
