C350 - gearbox oil and filter change

My car's exactly three ears old and has only done 23,000 miles. It's come up for its 'AO' service. Mercedes tells me that it needs the gearbox oil changed as well as the minor service and with cost £640!!!
What's the score with this? The service manager at Mercedes insists I have to get it done. I leased the car for 48 months so only have 12 months left. I said I would rather not have the oil change given the expense but he said that the lease company (not Mercedes leasing) will probably mandate it.
I saw on another forum when I googled "gearbox oil Mercedes" that it's usually required after 40k miles. Can anyone share some wisdom on this please? The car is currently booked for Thursday but I'll cancel if there's any advice here that may suggest another approach.......thanks.

They keep changing the interval but it may well be 31K miles, or 3yrs on your car. Put the details in here and it should tell you: http://lite.servicemercedes.co.uk/pc/pc_start.asp
It's quite an involved job on the 7 speed boxes but the price you've been quited seems very full, to say the least. Have you tried crying / begging?
(Or try another dealer).
Another possibility if you don't want to shop around would be to take out Mercedes ServiceCare for 2 years / 2 services. The 4th year service is expensive too as pretty well every service item needs attention.

This is great - thanks. Looks like it's 31k miles or three years for my car so I'm going o have to get it done. I recall a new company that was formed (on Dragon's Den) who serviced Mercedes so may try them to see if I can get it done cheaper. Be careful of the terms of the lease. You'll get a massive penalty if it's supposed to be dealer serviced. It might be OK - some company lease cars are being serviced in fast-fit places these days.
I looked at ServiceCare and it would cost you £31/mth for 2 years. If you've no other option then that would be a no-brainer as, based on the price this time, your next service will be around the same amount as it'll be a B service, plus air filters (think there are two on your car) plus fuel filter if diesel or plugs if petrol plus brake fluid.
Unless you think you can avoid getting the 4th year service done?
