The mrs likes odd stuff, she has a dodge nitro at the moment with a Merc diesel and wants a Chevy Captiva with a 2.2 diesel from I'm not sure who. It has a particulate filter and as its a shopping family car do I have to take it for a blast once a week or is that ott?

Car is astounding value and as long as it has a radio and stuff she is happy so no "get a landie, ml, etc" smile

How many miles will it do a year and what is a typical journey length?

Yeah you will need to do that if it's a short journey car.

DPF maintenance is in the handbook of my Dad's Audi A4. Every now and then he has to go onto the motorway and hold it at 4000rpm for 5 minutes.

Because she wants/likes the cars OP said. Not everyone wants a bloody Passat.

She won't have a normal car, driving experience doesn't matter so she has what she wants plus we have 2 3 year olds so need a bit of room.

We got bid £8k on the dodge a bit less than I thought so may try and sell it privately.

Captivas are not good products,a badged up bd child of Daewoo and GM/Vauxhall.
Apart from the dpf issues, which it will have at some point,(£700 for a non genuine dpf alone)
The ecu`s have a tendency to burn out, injector faults, various electronic gremlins,
2.2 timing chain woes, auto box problems, tyre wear/cost and the scariest being that the alternators catch fire, quite a lot Apparently.
Most parts are expensive and usually take a while to arrive.
That`s just the things I can think of off the top of my head and I have only ever dealt with 3 of them.

After a long journey to our nearest dealer for an alternator cable because the woeful parts system does not show it,then being shown to the workshop with it for identification by a fitter and without mentioning a word,I was met with:
"That`s a Captiva alternator cable, the alternator has caught alight hasn`t it?"
Followed by an enlightenment of his opinion and seemingly lengthy experience of them and a list of other common faults I have not yet encountered.

The quoted timing belt interval for the 2.0 is 100,000 miles when they sell it to you.
But it states that you must inspect it every 24,000 miles.
This I find very sinister,if you get to the point of inspection, removal of everything to get the cover off to inspect it properly, you may as well fit a new one.
and 24,000 is awfully short of 100,000.

This tells me that they don`t trust their own estimate of life expectancy, and seeing the belts routing, neither do I.
As one last hurrah,
One tug of the comically flimsy handbrake lever should tell you all you need to know.

Lol we haven't driven it yet!! The sales guy did say the mk2 is a better product than the mk1 (electric handbrake) but I take your points onboard.

But no nav on any of them - surely they must have had nav as an option?
