Reet,

I have a bunch of .mov files on my digicam and I want to convert them to mpeg.

Anyone know of a free converter for Windoze that will do the job without putting an 'unregistered software' banner across the video output?

many thanks

You can use the free mpeg converter tmpgenc:

www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html

Does not come with .mov as standars but there is a plugin which can be found here:

www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/4942/svcd.html

Lots of setting to play with so might need to play around to get the best quality out of it but plenty of tutorials etc on the web to advise.

Good luck.

I'm surprised a camera generates .movs, but...

Converting from one heavily compressed format to another is not an ideal solution. A .mov is potentially MPEG-4, which is far superior to the original MPEG anyway. Could you not just install Quicktime to view the .movs?

Thanks Chris, but to be honest Quick Time player for Windows sucks IMO - don't like the fact that I can't drag and drop files onto it, and funnily enough I still haven't mamanged to get it to work on my Win2K box - works fine on my XP box tho.

Just very frustrating.

Still a friend has 'introduced' me to Adobe Premier so all is not lost - just need a week or two to figure out how to really drive it.

thanks all.

Something you might like to look at first is Real Alternative.

It handles .mov, .mpeg, & prety much anything else you can throw at it. It also plays RealAudio files (including streaming) without the need to install Real's spyware - useful for the BBC website, for example. It does support drag & drop, & best of all (I think), it looks just like Windows Classic Media Player; yah-boo-sucks to "Real"!!

It's freeware, no malware included, very compact, & you can get it from: www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm
