Went out for a spin Sunday Chim drives really nice pull's well and put a wide beaming smile on my face, however.... I noticed what at first was a ticking sound, panicking I presumed it was the Tappets, however upon closer inspection I think it sounds more like something blowing it is coming from the rear of the engine and but to the right of the Plenum, I cant see anything amiss water levels are fine, Oil is clear (only Serviced a month(300 miles ago) anyone got any ideas??

I was thinking that could be but sounded further round and towards the Plenum than the Exhaust Manifold. I guess if gone that side it could be blowing to the rear. Worth a look. Was concerned it was the plenum but surely I would have noticed a drop in power.

I've had the ticking thing a few times. Mine was the manifold gasket each occasion.

Cheers Guy's feeling a little happier now, just had that sinking feeling it was going to be serious and expensive. Will order new gaskets and will hopefully sort on Saturday morning.

Take it easy undoing the bolts. Mine went in for a service and manifold gasket change last week. One sheared bolt later and the engine has had to be half dismantled to get it out. A cam inspection at the same time has resulted in a new one being fitted this week... gonna be an expensive week! yikes

Short length of garden hose to your ear. Listen near the plugs to identify a blown gasket. Mine blew and sounded like it was a cracked piston. Luckily it was the blown fibre gasket! Got some quality metal enbossed gaskets from Raceteck. It's a pig of a job to renew.

Soak bolts with WD40 over a few days should help. Methinks, also a short start warm up may allow the aluminium to expand away from the steel bolts to allow for easier removal.

F**K I have ordered the ACT metal gaskets and new Stainless bolts whilst I am there seems to make sense now worried about shearing one off I can be a little heavy handed at times.

Good advice gratefully received mental note to self .....visit Halfords buy jumbo size can of WD40

The manifolds are also prone to cracking at the four branches. The cracks are not visible and can only be checked by blanking off the manifold ends then pressure testing while squirting some soapy water down between the pipes. Easy job and worth doing while they're off.

You may want to consider buying a can of penetrating fluid: it's specially designed for the job of releasing stuck parts. I'm not doubting that WD40 works, but penetrating fluid (a.k.a. "penetrating oil") might be quicker and/or more effective.

I would advise against using stainless bolts.
First they are not as strong.
Second Stainless and aluminium are the worst combination for galvanic corrosion.

On the subject of broken bolts I have to hold my hand up and say it was me who broke the bolt on GJRs Griff.
The way the manifold is fitted there is little or no chance of a penetrating fluid getting under the head of the bolt and 1" down the thread into the head. Once the head was removed fluid was applied and left overnight. The end of the broken bolt was then beaten with a hammer (high level of frustration). I then welded a nut onto the remains with the whole lot cherry red. After it had cooled I again tried to remove it but the bolt sheared again a little further down but the weld did not fail.
All now drilled out and Helicoiled.

So it can happen be you heavy handed or not.

Can I suggest you use something like Plus Gas instead rather than WD40? WD40 will creep into the threads but it isn't a lubricant and ideally you really should be using a penetrating lubricant. (Ooooer missis!)

Cheers

Amazing this actually works..! The Gasket blowing is at the front not the back even though that's where it sounded like it came from (possibly the easiest one to get to) but at least I now know its only one blowing so I may leave for the weekend as I am going to the south coast for a couple of nights on Sunday and taking the Chim I don't want to be half way through and a bolt give's up on me they look pretty rusty.
