Cheapish bike

I am looking to buy a cheapish bike for riding around to hopefully lose a bit of weight and keep in shape.

I'm a 90kg 177cm tall adult (not sure if this information matters)

Can anyone recommend me a cheap and cheerful bike (I have no idea about the bike world but as this is a car forum, I would be looking at the Dacia Duster or Skoda Octavia of the bike world)

Any recommendations? Thanks

What kind of riding you looking at doing and whats your budget ive just bought a rockrider 8.1 from decathlon for the money its the best spec mountain bike you can buy in its price range im a bit bigger than you at 100kg and have lost 2 and half stone since starting to ride in october its good fun being able to ride the local trails at the weekends get the adrenalin pumping

have a look at the Giant Rapid hybrid as a starting point, they have a few in the range from £400. Too much? not enough?...

If its a road bike you are after the triban Btwin3 from Decathlon for £299.00 is the Tata Nano of the bike world.

Oh wait by Dacia Duster/Skoda Octavia I kind of meant cheap and cheerful but built to a degree of quality.

I want to ride on the road and maybe some gravel tracks. Nothing serious off road.
ideally I want to spend <£2-300

Get yourself down to Decathlon, for budget bikes they offer much better quality than branded names. Several members of my family have used their cheaper bikes for general duties and they've really stood the test of time with zero maintenance.

...it's a starting point, if nothing else. Expect suggestions to get inexorably more expensive, and less suited to the task, as the thread develops. Later, some kindly soul, who actually read the post I've quoted above, will try to get it back on topic. Order will briefly be restored before the thread dies in a boiling vat of utter chaos.

Costco have a sierra gs bike at £240 no idea how good a deal that is though.

Id go with decathlon allday pal had a little problem with my bike and they swapped it on spot with a new one there customer service is good guy in shop said if this problem had even of happened 2 years after buying they would of done same

My 2008 specialised rockhopper comp disc is on eBay at the moment. If you're anywhere near Leeds then you can have it for well within your budget.

It's "used" but still a very solid bike.

Op,

Contrary to other posts, imo you should not jump in at an "all the budget" bike. Get something mega cheap off the bay, and use it for 2-3 months - if you end up always on the road, sell it and buy a triban 3. If you end up on canal paths, get a cyclocrosser. If you likegetting muddy, a stup jumper or whatever.

It might help to go on a bike website / down to decathlon and see the difference between the different styles, in short you have a range, which goes something like this:
Full suspension mtb
Hardtail mtb
Hybrid
Cyclocross
Relaxed road bike (touring)
Racing bike
The top is muddly, rocky, bouncy, the bottom is smooth and tarmacced.

When i got back on a bike, i was sure i wanted an mtb. Now, 1800 road miles later, i'm glad i got a cheap and easily selllable mtb, and saved the budget for the roadie - new bikes lose too much of their value straight away to make the wrong first call imo.

I think that'll be fine. Decathlon make a good budget bike. All 'proper' mtbs have disk brakes nowadays though and the fork's mostly just added weight, but that won't do you any harm in your mission to get mobile, explore and shape up a bit.

Can't see it doing any worse a job than my Carrera Subway and that was quite a few quid more than the 5.1. It did the job in getting me mobile and able to progress onto a more serious (read: expensive!) level.

Enjoy the ride and buy any accessories from Decathlon too with the change
