Looking to buy a more up to date digi cam to replace my Canon Ixus (it's the original model, probably 3-4 years old now).

Quite like the feel and use of the Canon so am tempted by the latest 500 model.

Don't really need fancy features like sound/video but of course if they are there then that's all to the good.

Also like the Sony T1 but have been informed the lens is not up to that of the canon and results in poor light can be disappointing.

Size (or lack of it) is also important so something compact but I don't want to spend a premium purchasing something the size of a postage stamp.

Budget up to about £300

Ideas?

Cheers

Dave

I'm on my second Digital Ixus, and will buy another. Simply the best (for it's type) on the market in my opinion.

Buy another.

Try asking in the photography forum, somebody has just posted a very similar question and the Ixus 500 seems to come highly recommended.

I've had two Ixus's and have been really happy with them.
Got a good price off www.internetcamerasdirect.com if that helps...

My Canon Ixus 400 is currently in the menders after 14 months of ownership. It is a known fault and a search on the internet (look up Error 18) has revealed that they did a recall in the USA. It is costing me £150 to have it repaired with the modified part which is cheaper than buying a new camera. Canon's customer services is crap. They have also insisted on having the faulty lens before sending off the new one.

But I love my Ixus camera and have hated being without it for the last 3 weeks.

I have a Pentax Optio S4, which I am very happy with. Good resolution, nice lens, and very compact size.

Do you know if this issue is still possible with the 500?

Nope - I believe they have sorted the problem out. Think I read on one of the camera forums on the web that the problem was the teeth sheering off a plastic cog in the lens assembly. This gave the classic 'Error 18' on the display. This has been replaced with a metal one.

Took me days to get through to someone at Canon customer service phoneline who said that 1% of their cameras failed - although he couldn't tell me if this was just in the warranty period. He agreed that 14 months was not acceptable for the life of a camera but that Canon couldn't do anything to help.

Hopefully as my camera is being fitted with the modified part it should give me several years of use.

I have been using my Olympus OM20 over the last few weeks. Nearly 24 years old and still going strong - only needed a service once. Just hate that I need to scan the film and can't see the results instantly.

Sony T1 is a good camera i have. video mode is sublime and beats every other camera of its size or smaller for picture quality, what i mean is, you wont find a camera that is this compact or smaller with the same picture quality.

Arrived today, good service again from Amazon. Great cam, just getting up to speed on it though there is no way I will be wading through that manual!

Video is quite good actually, can see that being useful from time to time even if *only* VGA mode.

Took a new pic of car and posted on profile, bad light and heavily cropped/resized in PSP but hell it is Blackpool in autumn

Would recommend anyone buying one to pick up a 256 MB card as well (£19) - the supplied one is only going to hold a dozen or so full res pics

Well done mate - hope it is good to you and you don't have to experience Canon's aftersales service.

One month without my camera and still waiting for them to forward the new part and no one can tell me or the repair firm what is happening.

I got my compact from Amazon and they were superb when a bit snapped off after 11.5 months. Full refund, no questions, inc postage, and even an e-mail to tell me it had been processed.
However if you're outside the guarantee period I guess it's different.
