I'm thinking of purchasing a trailer for my Chimaera always useful and will need to trailer it for mapping and various other jobs, and probably want to use for RWYB days so I can give it death and not worry about return home.

Anyone know the smallest size trailer a Chimaera will fit on?? Will be towing with a Jaguar X-type saloon.

Regards

Neal

Neal, you will need a 4-wheeled version. Any single axle version will probably not have the capacity to carry a 1060Kg Chim (and spares/wheels)!.

On the 4-wheeled version, you will need to check width as some Brian James's are 1.57m width which will not fit the rear track!. You will also need to decide if you are driving it onto the trailer or winching it on/off? If you drive on, very few (except BJ 200 series with 10 inch wheels) will allow you to open the doors and get out!!

I'm at work and can't upload pikkies, but I can show you later tonight what I have for my Chim and now my Tam for Sprinting.

Ive also been considering joining the trailer queens at the track.
A chevy dayvan with a diesel or LPG conversion would run at about the same mpg as the Chim anyway.
No more tents and a lot less worrying. Only downside is it takes nearly twice as long to get there and back

I'm looking as well.

For those looking for a small trailer where reasonably standard wheels will fit on, PM chimpongas.

This allows the doors to open, drive on, drive off.

With this version, check the width and note that the Chim doors won't open, so how do you get out if you drive it on???

Hope you find the right trailer??

As said before, watch out for the doors... I had a Ifor Williams traler but had to take the roof off to get in and out... one with small sides or even wheels jutting up above the trailer base may cause problems wink

If your buying new go direct to BJT, ask for Adam! There expensive but hold there value! I'm pretty sure only the flat bed will do.

thanks for the reply's, seems the flat bed option would be easiest.

I have towed with a Brian James Trailer before and it was fine but it was the one with the sides and I had to take the roof off.

I will get hunting for one smile

forgot about licenses...So im assuming im ok with the bottom paragraph, my towing car weighs 1600kg, chim 1200kg, trailer can be up to 700Kg

Sound reasonable confused

"Licences held from 1 January 1997
If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can drive either:

a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500 kilograms (kg) Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM (with a combined weight of up to 4,250kg in total)
a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as it is no more than the unladen or ‘kerb’ weight of the towing vehicle (with a combined weight of up to 3,500kg in total)"

Sounds marginal to me.

I tow with a 2.5 ton Disco or the motor home.

Towing a 1 ton car on a trailer that must be 1/2 ton isn't a good combination being towed by a 1.6 tonne car IMHO.

Try Prg trailers, I think they are Manchester based. They manufacture them, I've used one for about 6 years. Very light.

OP I looked into this a while back for my Tuscan. Have a look at the max weight your car can tow. The lightest trailers suitable for a Chimaera are about 400kg. A Chimaera weighs about 1100kg.

So unless the X type can tow 1500kg minimum you will be out of luck and have to tow it with something heftier. You might be surprised how little it is allowed to tow (or how flimsy caravans must be).

I did end up buying a trailer but I haven't used it yet because the cars I have got are too marginal on towing capacity.

Agree with all the above.

Towing on the limit is butt clenching and dangerous.

Having 4 children and 20 years of caravan expierience a including a few 22 foot twin axles there is only one rule;

BIG CAR WITH BIG POWER, anything else is dangerous!

Hi All,
when I started towing trailers I was supprised by how low the towing capacity of a lot of the big people carriers etc was. Most of them are the same as normal cars. I plumped for a Mitsubishi shogun sport in the end , as this has car like inside and higher towing capacity. Now done 150K miles and never got into problems with a trailer.

Cheers
Geoff
