Myself and a few others are heading on a road trip over to the west coast of Scotland at the end of the month and as you head into the middle of nowhere obviously V-Power is non existent. So is a few tanks of crappy 95 fuel going to harm my GT3 or will it be ok? Would anyone recommend an octane booster/fuel additive or is that a waste of money?

Have you not thought about a trailer or better still a roof rack and you could take your own handy refills ?
Scotland is a wild place. It was told they run their cars on whiskey in some parts. This could cause terminal damage to 996 or 997 engines

Your ignorance offends my Scottishness - everyone knows Whisky is too expensive to run in cars, it's the blood of wild haggis we use instead (after we've caught them, speedy little buggers!)

It won't harm your car, it has an anti-knock built in. You will just not unleash all the horses.

Tempted to comment that it is in fact possible to use the blood of farmed haggi. Whilst it's a real dead zone for V-Power and its ilk - Inverness (Shell) and Oban (Esso - I think) are about it, I find Shell's Motorist App useful in finding the nearest. I've found something similar on Esso's web site. My 997.2 C2S is OK on 95, but definitely less perky than normal - enough for me to be prepared to drive some distance to find 98. Can't comment on how the Mezger's behave on slow juice.

What's the lowest octane of fuel the owners manual recommends? I'd not go below that.

The DME can only back off the timing so much and if the octane of the fuel is too low the engine could detonate itself to bits.

You sure there's no higher octane fuel available where you'll be? The various UK published car mags hit all areas of the UK and Scotland and so on and with exotics too not just oil burning econ boxes and I've never come upon any mention of a lack of proper fuel.

My 996 turbo has knock sensors so will run on 95. Although I try to run it on 98/99.

A few I make use of for super unleaded on my annual trip:

Leaving Glasgow, between Erskine Bridge and Loch Lomond on A82 - Esso on left near Dumbarton.

North of Oban on A85 - up hill for 2 miles Esso on left

Leaving Fortwilliam on A82 towards Inverness - Esso on right, BP a bit later on the left.

Broadford (Isle of Skye) - Co-op/Gulf petrol station.

Ullapool - Gleanor (Shell) last Super unleaded petrol as you travel north on the west coast.

Any modern Porsche will run fine on 95. The ecu will just adjust the timing a touch to suit it, with a small loss in power.

It certainly won't harm the car.

I'm currently in Islay and had the same fears about the lack of V-Power for my c4s when I came here last year.

I filled the tank at the Shell station beside the Erskine Bridge before setting off and there is a Tesco at Lochgilpead that does super unleaded.

Although I am surrounded by Distilleries and whisky is everywhere, I suspect I would be burnt at the stake if caught pouring their fine produce into the car...

Cheers guys! I've just looked in the manual (probably what I should have done to begin with) and it confirms that 95 is ok as it automatically adjusts the timing smile

Why Scotland? I went to the land of your GT3's birth recently and found 100 Octane Racing petrol there, it was a bit pricy at about Eur1.70 per litre.

You have not thought of stretching your GT3's legs without fear of losing your licence?smile

You weren't looking hard enough as there's plenty of Aral stations offering 102RON for a few Cents more than 95.

Clark, I have run mine on 95 before and it was fine. Still more than enough pep for the road.

Should be a cracking little trip. Going to be a great selection of cars. Very Porsche-heavy, but some other interesting stuff too.

Looking forward to it!

I've spent a lot of time touring Scotland and the only place i've struggled to get high octane fuel is on the north coast.
But no, a tank or two of 95 shouldn't do you any harm.
