How do you remove the panel with the heater controls? Does the whole centre console have to come out?

Yup, slacken the handbrake cable and place the handbrake vertical. Undo the two bolts either side behind the seats and raise the rear to get the console out.

Ribbon cable for the HCV?

just a tip if it helps, when I re veneered my dash and heater pannel I glued some super strong magnets onto the standard washer stud things that usually gule onto the back of the pannel. The magnets are strong enough to hold the panel in place but mean that you can just pull it out in future.

Hi Rob, just checking; pulled the pot off the valve and rotated with a screwdriver but motor keeps running; I haven't unsoldered it to check its ok yet. I bought a replacement pot from maplin but it seems to be smaller in diameter; maybe ok. If it really pi**es me off the sidecutters will stop the motor!!!

Wriggle the ribbon cable, I had mine partially fail and that gave the same symptoms as a detached wire. Which I also had...

John ,

You can easily check the potentiometer.

With your multimeter on the K-Ohms range measure across the two outer contacts, from memory it is about 5 K Ohms.

Then measure the resistance from one outside contact to the centre contact. This should vary from around zero to 5 K Ohms as you turn the spindle.

If the pot is open circuit the resistance will measure Meg Ohms. Keep your hands off the probes during measurement as that can lower the readings.

Good tip, but on a trial fit I found that the heater panel is heavy enough that it didn't need the magnets to stay in place, it just lays there under its own weight. Removing the panel is now a 10 second job.

Joke?. If you hit a pothole and there are lots about, will it just hop out!

I doubt it as it fits quite snugly in its recess but if it does come out then I will use the magnets or Velcro. Whatever the outcome it is now far more accessible than when bolted in place.
