Service Pack 2 on XP
Discussion
My computer downloads windows updates automatically and a few days ago I was prompted to install the latest one (which i now know to be sp2). The install seemed to go fine and I was requested to restart my machine. Thats where the problems started. My computer wouldn't restart at all, there was plenty of screen flashing and it tried rebooting itself automatically a few times. I was then offered the chance to run in safe mode or restore to last known good configuration. Neither worked. I contacted my computers manufacturer assuming it may have been a hardware fault and in the end they got me to use my system restore disk and carry out a restore with quick format. This worked, but I lost all of my files and programmes. Very annoying as I dont back anything up. At that point I didn't realise it was the windows download that had caused the problem, just thought it was one of those things, so when i was prompted again to install the SP2 I did. Same result. Now i'm afraid to install it again. Anyone have any ideas. I have been reading that the SP2 is very important with reference to security and that it should be downloaded as soon as possible.
Sorry Mate, can't help (computer numptie) but I also installed SP2 the other day and can report that I've (touch wood) had no problems as of yet. Best of luck.
Might want to "google" it in the newsgroups and see if any issues have arisen.

Had a look on google and seems lots of people have had problems. I Read the reviews on download.com, quite worrying, seems as though sp2 is prone to causing a lot of problems. Doesn't matter what spec your machine is, mine is very high. Also read that if you use file sharing programmes or any illegal software it messes your machine up, but that doesn't explain why it didn't work on mine 2nd time around when my comp had been completly formatted and had no installed programmes at all. I just wonder if microsoft are treating people as guinea pigs to find their problems. (A bit like TVR, lol). I am angry about this as I was always under the impression that you should trust downloads from microsoft, but I have lost lots of personal files and picture which are unreplacable.

When I ran the upgrade similar thing happened to me. When re-booted after upload it ran like a dog and was really chugging, shut it down and did not think anymore of it (although I do remember it no longer saying HOME EDITION after initial re-boot).
When I tried to start it up next day the very same problems you mention, safe mode etc, etc etc,. In the end I opted for the backup-restore option it gave me to remove the install which said i would not loose any files which was handy. I think this is a configuration thing which will automatically create restore points for you.
Also afraid to insatll again which it prompts me to do evreytime I fire it up now. Did you resolve it ??
