I've started getting excruciating pain in my forearms, primarily when letting go of a weight and releasing my grip, and it almost feels like its in the bone.

I notice it mainly when either spotting someone on bench press after I've lifted the weight back onto the stops. The other exercise that really sets it off is on the preacher using EZ bar. The pain only lasts for a second or two but I'd rather not have it at all.

Has anyone else experienced this and has a suggestion on how to stop it?

Yes I get this, I talked to a guy who deals with body mechanics; he says it's due to flexibility of turning your wrists if you get me. E.g do you find it hard to get your palms exactly face up. It's the added pressure of weight and that or something. I've forgot biggrin.
Only thing I would do is hammer curls and normal curls. And do lighter weights on a bar if you want to use it

I get this, its started getting better now. Its incredibly painful at the time. I have heard it called forearm splints before, similar to shin splints. Like you say, I found ez bar preacher curls and fixed bar cable curls painful and when spotting someone on bench or shoulder press it was painful too.

I have stopped cable curls and I have found a closer grip on the ez bar and slowly lowering the weight onto the stop, rather than letting it drop has helped. If you can position yourself lower down when spotting so your almost pressing the weights up rather than curling them it helps as well, or insist on barbell bench and just use 1 arm center on the bar and pull straight up.

Yes, curling with the EZ Bar. I can curl with straight bars and straight cable bars and dumbells and preacher curls on the machine without issue but as soon as I pick up an EZ bar and start curling, the pain comes.

Good to know it isn't just me then.

Forearm splints is a good way to describe it but a real short burst of pain unlike shin splints which seem to hurt forever! I'll try mixing the exercises up and see if that helps.

It eventually goes away as your body adapts. I'm not 100% sure what it is but I'd say it is to do with the tendons in your forearm and being stressed in a way that they are not use to. But yeah, I got it all the time, really painful. I still get it from time to time but not very often at all anymore and nowhere near as intense... and I'm lifting much heavier. I use an EZ bar all the time.

Did you find anything in particular helped or you just kept working out as normal and it gradually stoppped?

I got the same sort of pain last night when opening a can of tuna - to be fair I was squeezing the can opener as hard as I could as it is a piece of st. When I relaxed my grip on it, the same pain shot through my arm.

Not that I recall mate. Don’t let it put you off and it’s only this thread that got me thinking of it again… so can’t remember when it stopped but it was a really intense gripping pain in my forearms I’d get when I released the weight. When doing the reps and gripping it, you could feel it tightening but no pain, just when you released it would be about 3-4 seconds of intense pain.

It will go away eventually.

That is the perfect description of the pain I have been feeling.

It's not usually a valid answer but it seems as though 'manning up' would be the solution this time round!

Yep, I'd say stick with it. Varying it up a little won't hurt but your body will adapt...eventually! I am not a doctor btw, so don't take it as gospel, just my experience. biggrin
