Finally got my welder fixed in order to make up a tool to try and remove the adjuster wheels screwed into the side of the diff.

The tool I've made consists of 3mm stainless disc, with a 27mm nut welded to the centre, with four bolts welded (both sides) through holes that slot into the webs of the adjuster wheel.

I have one of these stuck on the end of my makeshift tool: http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/...

Delivering 450Nm, I've managed to loosen off one of the adjuster wheels, but the other just won't budge at all.

Any one have any hints or tips?

How about applying some heat

Tried that, but I only have a Butane torch and I don't think it's heating up the casing quickly enough. By the time the case is hot the Aluminium is hotter.

I just want to double check that one of the adjuster wheels isn't reverse thread?

Spray the Aluminium with plummers pipe freeze spray, or Comma frost bite. To contract it quicker?

Just to check before you go much further, and please forgive me if I am teaching egg sucking... You do realise that if you loosen the bearing retainers you will have to completely rebuild the diff to get the preloads right again?

Haha, yea. The diff is FUBAR - the pinion gear is in two pieces.

Can anyone confirm that the two adjuster wheels are both normal threaded?

I would give John at Readman Racing a call - he is most helpful and knows the BTR diff inside out.

Both normal thread but they corroded in there.

Be careful with heat as the aluminium will expand quicker, could try cooling it with water before trying to undo it.

John Reid is a good bloke with lots of spares, including adjuster wheels, which I needed after taking mine out frown

IIRC if you're tool is good, you just need to swing on it, shock it and generally swear at it until some penetrating fluid gets down in there and helps you out.

Could try doing it up as they just set position so should turn both ways.

+1 it's normal thread, mine 1st time around was ridiculously tight, we used heat and an 8ft length of box section!
