Evening all,

I was wondering on the feasibility of requesting the above from my GP?

Recently I have been experiencing quite a lot of back pain, throughout the top half of my back increasing when I breathe etc, which has left me a bit concerned it might be something sinister frown

other than just that, I have a "convenient" diet, smoke and drink regularly. I was hoping i would be able to attend and request things like gamma G T's, cholesterol level etc etc but I am aware that GP's now have such a small time allocation per patient that I would be sent packing as hypochondriachal....

I don't think I am, just would prefer a once over....

Is this possible nowadays? anyone been for one?

TIA

just go to see a doctor about your pain> when phoning in state to the receptionist it will be a longer session, this allows them to book in a double slot.

IMO I don't think you need a full check-over, though if the above doesn't help, i'm pretty sure if you go through a private clinic you will be able to get this.

vital stats are as follows smile

34, five foot ten. 88kg.

I agree I may not need the once over but the back pain has me a bit worried to be honest. It is like a deep pain that is across the whole back of the ribcage, or at least that's how it feels

have you checked on here?
http://symptoms.webmd.com/

useful fora rough indication, though don't get worried when it says: possible condition: dead. i.e. take it with a pinch of salt and don't expect the worst!

do go to a doctors though, potentially back pain across the back can indicate fractures, disc issues, or further down kidney problems.

I tend to avoid web diagnosis stuff, although that's not to say I'm not grateful to you for taking the time to reply and post the link. I work in psychiatry so have seen too many people diagnose themselves with some personality disorder or other based on interweb interactions smile

I do take the point re kidneys etc, and it is things like that which make me want a once over frown

my point was more that it could be something very different to what you expect, though I'm sure in psychology you will have covered some physiology. the spelling isn't that far off, so you must have!

You're young, or at least, sufficiently so that the "sinister" stuff has extremely low odds, even with your lifestyle.

If you don't mind spending some money, you can always for for something like a BUPA healthcheck.

Go to GP, explain the pain you're experiencing -> GP susses out possible causes and requests appropriate investigations, in a hell of a hurry if anything flags up the possibility of it being a 'sinister' cause (two week rule) -> makes any needed referrals -> etc. You really don't need an MOT, just give your GP a chance to tackle things. Although if you DID cough up, I'd predict the following: you will be advised to drink and smoke less, and eat more greens. That'll be a hundred quid please, Sir. biggrin
