Ladyfriend just had her 2008 118d repaired at a main BMW Dealeship.

This does not include the 1 hour it took to find the problem or the cost of connecting the car ecu to some tech.

£90+vat labour per hour. Total bill probably nearer £1600ish..

I always found BMW competitive on service pricing. But christ on a bike...

Their parts prices don't help.

Bmw clutch for my m3 £350
Sachs clutch from ECP with discount £150.

Exact same part, Sachs supply bmw for this app.

Bmw M5 clutch and flywheel, £600
Luk clutch and fly from ECP, approx £350

Exact same parts.

Labour at my specialist £40/hr+vat
Bmw up to £120+vat

Car parts for less have 15 quid off all parts over a 100 quid so I just got luk bmw clutch kit for £127 posted. If it needs a DMF that's another 290-ish.

1600 is a piss take

They are providing a service at a cost.

You might be able to get it done cheaper through motor factors, and a back street garage.

But they are targetting people with more money than you or who don't want that hassle.

I'd be more upset that the 2008 car's clutch had died, than the money. Is it galactic mileage?

Can't be bothered with BWM anymore. Whats laughable is that people buy things like 118D's because they think they are cheap to run but they end up costing huge amounts in over-priced servicing, massive tyres, high insurance and all too often, faults and failures.

At 36000 miles! Can you believe that? I asked her to get them to offer some goodwill, either that or try and shag the head mechanic. Neither worked..

Never heard of a clutch fail with so few miles

It's a 5-year old car. How much has it cost in depreciation over the 5 years? How does the repair bill compare?

Thats disgusting... How does she drive it? I'm not wanting to have a pop, but if clutches are dieing in that mileage then there is something wrong with it or she is driving the clutch all the time...

Why do they need to change the dmf at the same time? At that mieage I wouldnt even think about it.

And for DMF to be changed at that mileage. Mind you, if it's got the awful CDV I'm not surprised

It's a 1 series hatchback....and aimed at your everyday motorist....I think most would horrified at that cost.

Does it have a full main dealer service history? That is often the key to "goodwill".

Was very lucky to get my 2008 118d 80k mile clutch replaced under extended warranty due to judder (well known issue). At least your friend will have the new revised clutch fitted which is much nicer to use although not much of a consolation. Having always serviced my own cars BMW prices are from another world - my newish 1 series (bought from auction) recently went in for some warranty work - they did a "health check" and some comedy pricing followed - £500 for some discs/pads. I bought the discs/pads for £120 from ECP and managed it in an hour. I suppose if you are spending £20-30k+ on a car like my mate the odd £500-1000 isn't the end of the world (plus you get nice coffee) but to me it is bonkers.

Well that's all made up isn't it
Variable servicing cheaper than my Skoda Octavia . Fully comp insurance under 200 for me. Tyre/wheel choice down to you, the same as any brand. Less faults than most on independent surveys. The inconvenient truth..

You can easily get it done cheaper elsewhere. I got quoted nearly a grand for a mondeo clutch change at ford, it was half that in a local garage.

If it's any consolation I paid £1150 for clutch, flywheel and a remanufactured starter motor at Ford 5 years ago

Flywheels have dropped in price massively in that time
