Hi, I'm contemplating a Manual Gen 2 997 turbo.

I'd be grateful if can you share your direct experiences of a manual 997 Gen 2 turbo compared to a Gen 1 997 Turbo please?

Thanks.

I think this one has come up a few times in the past three months you might want to google for more responses.

I found the gen 2 car more tail happy and sports car like. Amongst other things.

If I were going manual I would try a modified gen 1 car first with remap, filter and zaust and damptronics before choosing.

You can obviously do those mods to a gen 2 car too but you will save a bundle.

Gen2 car is good for 600bhp, gen1 car is good for 700bhp but the limits of the 997 turbo chassis mean that Porsche had to improve the electronics in the gen2 car to get the nessary performance gap down between it and the gtr. So bhp not the whole story. there were significant changes underneath the skin of the gen2 car. The evidence suggests that going over 530bhp yields ever decreasing improvements of track times. Which (surprise) is where the turbo s is pegged at.

The 600bhp gen2 Ruf cars are not much quicker than a stock gen2 turbo over a 1min 20sec track but will get the bragging s rights at brunters smile

I also found tyres to make a much bigger difference than on a standard 911 and 987. I would avoid making concrete decisions based on cars wearing Bridgestone re050's as this rubber provides a much lively drive over the michelins.

I don't really like my bridgestone tyres much as the back goes out all the time and while the electronics are greati think its a case of when, not if, i have a moment. I am driving mine as the maker intended.

I've driven Porsches for many years, but never really engaged with the Turbo models.

Had a 997 GT3 for three years, during which time I drove a couple of 997 Gen 1 Turbos, which felt very fast and competent but rather unfulfilling. However, eventually tried a Gen 2 Turbo S and was much more impressed, and bought one which I have now owned for almost three years (alongside some earlier 911s).

Partly due to the chassis aids (much of which has filtered into the 991s) it feels and sounds more involving to drive. I use mine for mainly long distance driving and there is really good mix of GT comfort, everyday/all weather security and practicality, yet plenty of rewarding B-road feedback.

A lot is written about the blistering performance, but it can still be enjoyed at legal speeds and I rarely push it and have never used the launch control.

It will be fascinating to see how next year's 991 Turbo can move the game on.

Forgot to say, Gen 2 Turbo available with manual or PDK, 'S' only available with PDK. If you go for Gen 2 manual, try and find a high spec model, most of the options are desirable, especially the chassis enhancements.

Thanks for the replies. Does the Gen 2 997 also have a DFI engine, or is it akin to the Mezger/previous type please? How is it on fuel consumption compared to the 997 Gen 1 please? Thank you.

It's DFI and mpg benefits as a result, although I get about 17mpg on average in mine.

If you want manual I'd go for the gen1. The GT1 Mezger block is a fantastic piece of engineering! The only reason why it was discontinued is the cost of making it. Well - the 991 RSR is still using the Mezger.

If PDK then gen2 no question.

If going for Gen 1, try and get a 2009 example because you get the new pcm, Bluetooth etc
