Can i afford one ?.......... do i care ?

Ok for the last week i've been driving round in a £300 car, and although strangly amusing it just doesnt do it for me.

I have an illness (PHerisum) i think the only cure maybe a TVR.
I dont earn a lot, but dont have much outgoings either.

Is it possible to run a 4.0 Chimaera on a budjet of £250 - 300 per month ? including everything apart from the purchase.

And the other question.........

Do i really care if i can afford one ? shall i just buy one anyway and work things out as i go (as usual)?

Edited to say: someone please talk me out of this, my birthday (23rd) is about 6 weeks away and a Chimaera would be a nice presant to myself.

So that's £1000 left.

independent service is about £250 for minor and £400 for major, possibly plus VAT a year.

Did that figure of 250-300 include petrol etc? If so, you're cutting it fine...

erm, if you have to budget then its not a great start. It might be helpful to know what annual mileage you plan on doing too. If its 60k p/a then no. If its 10k per year then probably.

I dont factor petrol/insurance/tax into my running costs. However, a service is usually £400 - £600 and you will need parts now and again which can add up. At 23 your insurance will be pricey so add the petrol costs at around 18 - 23 mpg and the tax and you do the maths...

On a serious note, there are some good cars about at the cheaper end of the market now but be careful.

For servicing, mine cost about £300 for a 6000 mile service but included MoT, small amount of work and a wash! That was at a non-TVR approved garage but was someone who was recommended and does have a fair few TVR customers.

In summary, if you can......DO IT...you won't look back...except maybe to see the Boxter you have just left behind (no offence!).

just wondering who you use for servicing?

Ok mate, cheers. Out in London on Sat night so probably won't be back but may stop off in Liphook on the way back through.

Get one! That's plenty of money to run one on, jeez if mine cost me that much a month I'd sell it.

Then again my insurance is only £550 for the year and I only need a service annually (6000 miles/year). Are you planning mega miles in it?

I got my first one when when I was still 24 (only just), but it helped the insurance that I'd already driven a powerful RWD car for longer than 12 months. If insurance isn't going to be the majority of your budget I'd say definitely go for it. You'll love it!

Where else is good for insurance, bearing in mind im only 22 (nearly 23) ?

Buying a Chimaera also marks you out as the more sophisticated TVR driver, it elevates you above the primeval knuckle dragging cave dwelling Griff Rhys Jones driver, and the melancholy but hearty, real ale swilling, dominoe and skittles loving, cordorouy wearing, and beardy 'S' drivers, not to mention the mirrored shades and Farah attired wedge drivers, with their cassette collections of Tony Blackburn chart toppers from 1978.
