Water leak in Footwell
Discussion
Had a very wet drive over the weekend in Wales. The result of which I have discovered I have a leak in both passenger and driver footwells. On the passenger side it is at the base of the transmission tunnel where it meets the floor. All dry on the sides of the footwell though. Worse on the drivers side. Here it is wet, again at the bottom of the footwell but this time both at the bottom of the transmission tunnel but also on the carpet behind the pedals - but again only at the very bottom. Also wet on the opposite side to the transmission tunnel, but again only at the bottom. Ie all carpet dry above the floor.any ideas anyone as to where this may be leaking from and how best to sort it.
As you've been driving in the wet, then it is likely to come from the floorpan. If you have a 97 onwards Chim, check the seal on the bolts in the floorpan holding the battery in. It maybe worth checking to see if any grommets have been added to the driver's side. If they're leaking, it may be time to loosen them off and reseal with some silicone.
Failing this, if you hadn't been driving in the wet, I would suggest that it was also worth checking the heater hose connections that enter the pax footwell at the rear of the bulkhead above the fuse box (see pic).
May also be worth check the door seals and around the windscreen. Sounds more like a water sealing issue if you've been out in the best of the Welsh weather!

If it is at the transmission tunnel then I would suggest the wiper spindles/washer pipe holes. I think mine leaks at this point but only a very small amount.
There is a potential leak point under the AFM on the passenger side under the bonnet. It is important that this inspection hatch is watertight as your fusebox will get wet.
As said above, the biggest leak culprits are the brake reservoir, clutch master cylinder cover and the grommets in the wing. The pedal box bolts can also leak.

Thanks for all the help so far, there are several things here for me to check over. I'll have a good check through the suggestions. It is always difficult to get to the bottom of where water leaks are coming from. I will go any buy some sealant and start to reseal where you have all mentioned. I have had the carpets out today and the doors open to try and dry it off inside. I think this will take a while!

One I've been wondering about recently, is the possibility for water to get in along the bonnet release cable by capillary action between the inner and outer... the catch sits right to catch rain water and the general direction of the cable run is down and into the cabin
One thing I have learned about water. It will get anywhere and everywhere. The only way to locate the source of the leak is to follow the drips/ stream.I also have a leak which I can't trace. The very bottom inch or so of the carpet on the transmission tunnel gets wet where it meets the floor on the driver's side, but there's no dampness above that point, and neither is there any dampness on the carpet on the floor of the footwell - so the water can't possibly be dripping down from anywhere because then you'd find wetness on the top of the carpet. It must be running down the fibreglass from somewhere.
For me, it's happening when the car is parked, and even to some extent when the cover is on - which proves it's not doing its job very well.

Taste leak (i'm a p...t!) to see if it's not brake fluid. Then spit, if it is. Have done this on my boat to see if it's salty water or not.
Christian, Welsh rain water is the best for photo print washing, not chalky. Smiles.
