Help - I've had a Cerbera 4.5 (98 model, 20K miles) for 4 years - great car and even better it has rarely let me down. However, last week whilst out in it the clutch pedal went completely ie hydraulics went and clutch refused to engage. Found some oil under the car which I'm guessing is from a failed slave cylinder.

Is there anything that can be done short of having a complete new assembly ie slave, housing, clutch etc from the dealer which he is quoting 1200 - 1500 GBP??

I've been told the cost is high because my current assembly is an old one so bits are no loonger stocked!!!

If its a 4.5 I think I am right in saying that you do not need a complete new clutch. The early 4.2's did have to have a new Bell Housing and Flywheel, updated to 4.5 spec, so I think in a 4.5 you should be ok.

If its the slave then why do you need a new clutch? Maybe the material is contamanated with fluid but it might be ok, although why the clutch is out you want to replace what ever you can afford as this will save on labour costs.

You could try bleeding the clutch this may give you a few more miles but you only going to delay it i am afraid.

Good luck

Unless your clutch plate or fingers have gone, I don't see any reason why you need to pay for the full kit?

Most likely the seals have gone, replacing those is about £30 in parts and 4-6 hours labour. If the actual cylinder is scored then a new one will be a bit more expensive (and harder to get hold of), but nothing close to the cost of a full clutch and housing.

I'd recommend getting a quote from one of the independents.

You could try Topcats on 01296 655109. This has happened to my 4.5 a couple of times and they just change the cylinder or whatever is causing the problem and you're back on the road in no time. Even if you do need the whole lot its likely that Topcats would do it for less than the dealer is quoting you.

IIRC, some 4.5's have the eariler clutch fitted, & i don't think the later slave fits the early bellhousing.
Give jools a call, he'll sort it out.

It might just be the slave seals that have gone. However, its a big job time wise. Best to check the clutch itself while you are in there.

sounds like the slave cylinder .... probably just needs a new seal kit.

I've just put my Cerb in to have EVERYTHING done - talk about all coming at once .... bill for 3.5K ....ouch !!!!!!!!!!
