I took this photo in Whitby on Saturday and it was a hazy old day - I forgot to shoot in RAW, naturally and ended up editing a JPG. This is the before:

And this is the after:

What I see is the darkness at the edge of the photo - like a ring. Is the fault that I edited the JPG or is there a general photography error on my part - I have a D3100, used a Nikkor 55-200 VRand didn't use a lens hood.

EXIF: 1/2500, f 6.3, ISO 400, 200mm

Its called vignetting, probably caused the lens and your processing has just accentuated it, it is easily removed with processing.

Arse. Something obvious.

Can Lightroom remove it? LR is my tool of choice.

Yes. Which version are you using?

If you go to the develop module in LR on the right hand side near the bottom is a section titled Effect and Post Crop Vignetting, move the slider titled 'amount' to the right until your happy with the result, I'm guessing 15-20 should be more than enough.

Follow Pickled's far more helpful post and have a play with the settings until it looks right.

Blimey, well it seems very fast for a moderate aperture and average ISO.

Add more vignette instead then make it B&W to give it a 'period' feel. Might work well ?

How can I avoid this on-camera?

You can never avoid it completely but stopping down will help.

Rather than having to correct it manually though, your camera may have a setting that automatically corrects it based on the known characteristics of whatever lens, focal length and aperture you are using. Similarly, Lightroom has an automatic correction tool.

Vignetting at the long end, stopped down to f6.3 - are you sure?
Most vignetting occurs wide open and at the wide end.
If it is as presumed, then that's a pretty st lens, imo.

Harsh - as I've always enjoyed using this lens.

It was a hazy day and I shot that one in JPG so no RAW to fall back on - I wonder if I've overdone the PP in that case.

No, harsh would be in relation to the lens vignetting at your settings.
I've now seen mention of other forms of vignetting on Wiki, but I've only ever seen mechanical vignetting being discussed in reviews and images showing the problem.
None of that ever talked about problems at the long end, and not least when stopped down a bit.

Anyway, regarding the PP, if those numbers in the linked screenshot are indicative, I'd be surprised at the contrast boost (which seems to have removed some colour from the ship) and the histogram shows quite a distinct disharmony of RGB channels, so the colour temp would need tweaking to align them more.

If you have the full size original JPEG, and don't mind, send me a link by email, via my profile, and I'll have a play and see what I can extract from it.

I hate to butt in.. but is it me, or is it only sharp on the breaking waves. The ship is hazy, as its actually out of focus. F6.3 wouldn't give you infinity focus on a lens of that focal length.. nor the dof to get both the break and vessel in one, I can see the waves drifting off a few feet behind the break.

You might find it will take more than PP to make that right.. Sorry to say. frown

Don't be sorry - it was a REALLY hazy day and the PP can only do so much. That was the first in a series so that was more of a Match and Shoot shot. There are better photos in the sequence but I just wanted to know what the Vignetting was.
