New project. Sadly not a TVR
Discussion
Hi All
I've got a new project or will have when I pick it up next week.
It's very off topic as it is no where near a TVR. But if I can get the Wife out in this for a while, you never know I might be able to get her into a wedge or maybe even an S.
It's an MG Miidget. Don't laugh.
Anyaway the reason for the post is, does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to get one resprayed? Assuming I do most of the prep work myself. It seems a cracking little car but must have been painted in a bad environment as it looks like its got the completion of a teenager!
So I'm thinking strip off all the outer trim etc. to avoid masking. Flat it off and get someone to blow it over.
Any advise is as alway appreciated.
Cheers Karl

Hi mate..If you wait until i fit the supercharger then i will park delilah next to it and rev like its going out of fashion and im sure that will do it...Sorry couldnt resist...
...
I was asking for that for daring to mention such a tiny little car on here!It is the right colour though. Bright yellow to match my 350i. I suspect it might be slight less thirsty as well and a lot slower.
My pal has a Midget we often go out on runs together he pulls away on the twisty roads and i catch him up on the straights. Great little car handles amazing. He has spent quite a bit on the car ie new pisons rebores cam and new exhaust system but all the suspension is original bits. Heres a vid of one of said runs.

My advice, is too get on eBay, and buy a half decent compressor, gun and paint in cellulose and do the job yourself. It will end up the same money and you will learn a skill, then you got a compressor for many other future jobs if you buy all the other bits!I've got a new project or will have when I pick it up next week.

You will love it, they do handle surprisingly well, but they are sooo small.
If you do all the prep work, stripping off trim and a good sanding down, that cuts out the majority of the work, just a final flat any little repairs and spray, including materials would be roughly £800 I would think, for a good job. Then back to you to cut and polish, to a final shine and rebuild.

Isn't the problem with home spraying moisture? Getting the water vapour out of the compressed air?
I wouldn't mind doing this to be honest as I have the room and was quite successful last time I tried. But it was only a chassis in black for a kit car. Body work? I've done a sill repainted and it was ok but never been tempted on a whole car.
Cheers Karl
I will be doing this myself soon, you can get in line filter to take the moisture out, home spraying other pitfall is keeping bugs and s**t out of the painted finish. The plastic protective sheets available from DIY stores pinned or stuck around to create a tent really helps.
Then pick a dry still day, give it a go, it aint rocket science and 1200 grit sanding, t-cut and elbow grease can improve an imperfect finish.

What size compressor would I need?

Remember any good paint job is down to prep and without good prep the end result will not be good do a test area and see how many layers of paint there are and how many times she has been painted before the best re sprays are always bare metal re sprays a lot of work but well worth the effort as you discover areas that may have been filled badly in the past and can address these now rather than 18 months later once they start to show. Then pick a dry still day, give it a go, it aint rocket science and 1200 grit sanding, t-cut and elbow grease can improve an imperfect finish.
A re spray is only a few hours work but a well prepared body for re spray is days and days of work.
My self i prefer to get an expert to do the painting as i have yet to see a home sprayed car match the finish of a job done in a spray booth.
All Depends on what your expectations of the end result is and what the car is to be used for.

Yatesy350i, good luck woith your new project.
As well as TVR's (to be honest I am a complete petrol head) I am in to classic mini's and am taking delivery of another one tonight (a nice mini cooper
)
I think it is good to have an interest in all classic cars
And, like your midget, my classic mini will be a lot more economical than my wedge but a LOT LOT slower

The 24 litre capacity 2.5hp ones should be sufficient, to keep a constant pressure to the gun.
Heres a pic of my MGB that I started by spraying the replacement wings but ended up respraying the whole car with aerosol cans, roughly 3 500ml tins per panel,
so about £150 for paint (bulk buy one batch for colour match) plus primer, plus the sanding paper, masking tape t-cut and polish. So once you buy a compressor £100 and paint £70 its about the same cost plus you still have the compressor for the next one,and the effect is much easier to achieve , which is why I am buying one for myself.

Good job on the mgb, yes Can be done with spray cans as long as the batch numbers are the same, professional paint mixers can make a whole batch in the colour of your choice so you get exactly the same colour in each can. I spray in my barn, with large dust sheets strewn across the rafters to make a roof to stop stuff coming down, only spray in day so lights don't attract the bugs, only spray between April and early June, or September to early November, so it's not too hot and cold. Only use cellulose paint or otherwise known as 1 k, you can spray over if you makr mistakes. 2 k or 2 pack is very good but you can only spray once and need breathing apparatus. If your not sure, go to u tube and look up how to spray a car etc, there are some good tips and vids.
