Hi all

Just removed the engine mount brackets from the block and found, what I think, something strange. It seems as though the bolts on the nearside are different lengths to those on the offside.

The below pic shows the nearside bolt much shorter than than the offside. Both of the larger/bottom bolts on each side are like this. Is this correct ? There was also a spacer on the offside rubber mount. Again, is this normal ?

Kris,
On mine there are three bolts for each bracket, 2 large on the bottom and a smaller bolt for the top. Spacer on offside only is correct.

I have the 2 smaller top bolts. They are the same. Its just the different lengths on each side for the bottom bolts.

Although if the spacer is correct then I suppose it makes sense that the bolts on that side are longer.

Thanks for that, has settled the mind.

Actually thought about this just after I logged off last night. It shouldn't make any difference to the way the mount bolts to the block. Guess I'm back to square one !

Any more thoughts anyone ?

Kris,
Try the longer bolts in all four holes, I would guess at some point someone has replaced them with shorter version. I would get some new longer bolts. If your stuck I have two up the garage I can send you.

Thats a very kind offer Ian, but I'm going to be replacing all the bolts anyway. Very much appreciated but guess you can hang on to them. beer

I'm into this one at the moment, presumably the rear most bracket bolts require a UJ and couple of extensions, as there's no way any spanner is getting in there.

2 x 3/8 UNC bolts and 1 x 5/16 UNC per side

I looked and felt everywhere, could only find 2 per side. Where's the 3rd?

Does anyone know the correct torque setting for these bolts. I can't find a specific figure in the usual references.

I have the engine out of my 1992 Griffith 4.0 and here is a marked up photo of the driver side engine mounting arrangement. Hope it helps.

I'm planning on installing the engine and gearbox (as one) this weekend. Removing the engine mounts was a right faff.
Anyone got a good sequence for refitting engine mounts to the engine and chassis when re-installing a complete engine?
Types of spanner, sockets, extensions, UJs etc?
Access is a PITA for the engine mounts.

I always struggle to get the mounts in no matter which way I do it!

The last few times has been easier because I’ve been doing it with the car up on a ramp but even so it is amazing how difficult it is to squeeze the mounts inbetween the chassis and the steel engine mount brackets!

As far as I recall, they are 17 mm nuts with washers that secure the mounts to the steel brackets and the easiest tool to use is a 17 mm ratchet spanner.

All the nuts and bolts that secure the mounts to the chassis are all the same and are 9/16 if I remember correctly.

When fitting the engine mounts , I usually find that a few lengths of timber, 1 1/2”x1 1/2” or similar used as gentle levers to push the engine to one side while squeezing the mounts in helps.

Good luck.

If I've understood correctly it goes something like this.
1) Attach mount brackets to the engine block and secure hardware
2) Attach rubber engine mounts to the mount brackets and fit the mount stud nuts, but not tighten fully?
3) Lower engine into position and "finangle" engine mounts to chassis mounts using wood levers
4) Insert long chassis to engine mount bolts & nuts

......I'll update when I've actually done it....

That's about it.

I usually attach the O/S mount loosely to the bracket and chassis and then try and wiggle the nearside in.

Still a pita!
