I am nearing the last stages of the work to be completed on my black 400SE. Just one last thing remaining when it returns from the paint shop and that is a section of the exhaust. It is fitted with a stainless steel exhaust system including the manifolds, but for some unknown reason the last small 90 degree section right at the back end, just before the fit on tail pipe, it is made of mild steel and has rusted. It was an advisory at the MOT but in any case I want to change it to make it a complete stainless system. Are these available anywhere off the shelf and if so where? I already know about Pipecraft but I haven't spoken to them yet. If anyone has any information on this I would be very grateful.

Hi Tony I would imagine these are made to order, but if you're lucky you might find a pre-bent part on Ebay that will do the job, which will be much cheaper. If you find one that fits let me know as I probably want to do the same thing sometime!

To make stainless pipes fit over each other you'll just have to saw a slot in the outer pipe for about 2-3", then you can use U-clamps to squeeze and clamp the outer over the inner pipe. The last few inches of this system have very little pressure in them so you can seal any gaps with fire cement.

I think this is going to be a difficult one to find ready made. Does anyone know the diameter of the pipe? If all else fails I will call Pipecraft and see if they can make one. They'll probably want a kings ransom for it being custom made but I'll keep you informed whatever the outcome in case you want one too.
Couple of reasons why I want to change it. One is that I think it's leaking and the other it doesn't look good at the MOT.

Tony,

With a new exhaust going on mine at the moment, the old 90 bend might be available. I'll let you know once I get the car back and see what's been done! If you don't hear from me, just PM me and remind me smile

I would be very interested in that 90 bend if you don't need it. When will you get your car back? Then I can PM you when you are ready.

When I needed a stainless exhaust bit for my Vixen I managed to get the bit from http://www.jetex.co.uk/website/custom_parts.php?ma... Might be worth a look to see if they've got anything the correct size.

The last one I bought was either from RT Racing or ACT = don't they do them anymore?

Problem now sorted. I went to Pipecraft today and they made that rear piece up for me and fitted it. Also they checked the rest of the exhaust and changed a couple of the cotton reel mountings on the central box. Couple of nice boys there with good metalwork skills and full equipment. A kind of made to measure exhaust, a somewhat dying trade now rarely found. Excellent result.

Mine snapped in half and the end fell off so I got 70mm stainless pipe off ebay - one 90 degree bend and one piece 250mm long.

Chopped both at 22 degrees in the mitre saw then welded them together.

Now I have to wait for the long pipe to rot away and I'll replace that too with more stainless....
