E class 7 seat option.

With an expanding family & a small granny who occasionally needs transporting I've been looking at our options and just can't bring myself to consider an S-max.
Does anyone have an E class with the 3rd row of seats?
Are they any good?
How much boot space is lost when they're folded?
Can you use them for children or adults?
I think Mercedes is the only manufacturer nowadays that makes a 'normal' car with this option, the only other option is a 4x4 or Mummy wagon and neither of those really appeals.

Never seen them in real life but I understand they fold flat under the floor, blurb says they are rated for 50kgs and 1.4m little uns. I'd hazard a guess you no longer have a spare wheel? Google images they seem cute and are rear facing.

Look good - haven't used them yet, only bought the car a few months ago and kids are 2.5 and 0.5 - so they aren't in them yet. Hopefully the car will give 5+ years service and we'll use them in coming years.
No boot space is lost when they are folded, although I suspect underfloor storage is lost and a space saver spare wheel resides underneath.
Children only - up to a weight limit that ought to equal beginning of teens depending on number of Macdonalds visited... Interestingly because they are rear facing, there doesn't seem to be any legal requirement for car seat/booster seats etc. Although you'll want to make sure the seat belt fits.
We've got the extra seats in our S212.
As previous posters have mentioned, they fold flat and there is a space saver spare beneath the floor. There's enough room in the spare wheel bay to fit tow ropes, spare bulbs and other nic-nacs.
When the seats are down the load space is the same as any other estate, obviously when the seats are up the load space is largely occupied, but there is room to fit coats, soft/school bags around the space available. If you need 7 seats and lots of luggage space you'll need something different.
My children are 7 and 10, and have been using them for the last 2 and a bit years. I would estimate the seats will be good for at least another 2-3 years maybe more. The kids love them, and they're not as loud further away and facing the wrong direction, so winners all round.
I bought the reversible boot mat to protect the floor. It's carpet one side and plastic on the other, and will roll up behind the rear facing seat back when you want the extra seats and can be rolled back across the boot floor when you're finished. Keeps everything clean & tidy.
If it's an occassional 7 seater with flexibility to be a load lugger combined with great economy (I have averaged 47mpg over the last 72k), and comfort then the E estate with the rear facing seat option takes some beating.

E class 220cdi 5g 06 on 7 seat estate is what you want.
Whislt the 320cdi V6's are much much faster, the 7g box that comes standard is very poor and the engine poses more quirks. The 4 clydinder MB engine is hardly ground breaking, but before the OM651 Blue efficiency range, was very reliable. The 212 from 2009 comes with an OM651 engine and is reliable but ensure the injectors were changed to the solenoid type

We have them in our 04 270cdi, which was bought for exactly the reason you describe - couldn't face an MPV and the XC90 / X5 options felt like you were carrying too much car around the bulk of the time.
They're usable from 4/5 upwards and are very popular with the kids - waving and pretending to shoot everyone following seem to be the favourite pastimes... Enough space when they're up to get coats, school bags and the occasional scooter in and as the previous posters have said, you still get the same massive boot when they're folded away.

I've had a 7 seat 2005 E Class for three years. The kids were 3 and 5 when I got it, now 6 and 8. It really does make the car very versatile. Sometimes they'll use them for fun, other times we end up with a combination of six or more adults and kids. Mine also came with the pop up boosters in the normal rear seats which makes it even more flexible.
To me a 7 seater E Class is an eminently more sensible solution then MPV's or SUV's, neither of which float my boat.
