upgrading 996 turbo?
Discussion
Hi Porsche peeps,
My dad has a 996 turbo standard, which I am fortunate enough to drive sometimes. What a car! Just wondering about the x50 upgrade and the price for it retro fitted or what other performance upgrades are there. 40 or 50 extra german horses would be lovely if only a little extra dosh.
Any advice on best route to go for more power x50 or alternatives?
cheers

I believe the X50 pack retro fitted is around £8k.
Another option is an ECU upgrade from a variety of 3rd party tuners.
DMS for example charge £2k for their ecu upgrade giving around 500bhp.
The advantage of the X50 of course is it retains the porsche warranty. While DMS (& lots others) say thier chip is invisible to Porsche diagnostic equipment, I would assume all that was needed was a drive from a Porsche mechanic to realise that the car was not standard. So any warranty would be void & any goodwill claim that might have been offered would be out the window too !

I understood the X50 also had steel synchros to help the longivity of the gearbox subjected to the increase in power.
I totally agree with the notion of getting what you pay for in Porsche tuning.
If I were looking at a second hand car that I felt was tuned on a high bhp / low £ budget I would run a mile.

Spoke to DMS who claim they send an engineer out to you for a couple of hours remap the ecu, reord the original map so that it can be easily restored anytime to standard and for £1900 +vat you get a genuine 502bhp just from the ecu remap. You then go out for a drive with the engineer and if you don't want it he changes it back for no extra cost.
Sounds to good to be true, will let you know if we get it done. Thanks for the advice,

To back Iggy up a bit, I had also heard a less-than-positive comment re DMS, so it may be worth taking Rico's 'nothing negative' comment quite tentatively. The jury's still out in my opinion, but I hope they are proved true to their word - 1900 GBP is great value.
A couple of points tho': I believe the standard, ie non X50, turbos are overworked at a true 500bhp and this can affect their longevity. AmD's rechip for Rich had 490 or so, which isn't apparently a problem. I'm sure 500 would have been attainable if they felt like it and would have been better for marketing purposes.
It should also be noted that as far as I'm aware, the DMS remap isn't bespoke to your car; it is a general map.

Just been thinking about this, the turbos on the standard 996 TT are KKK K16's I believe which are the same ones used on the 993TT.....most tuners recommend using hybrid K16/24 turbos (i.e. more puff with least lag possible) when wanting 500 romping shires on the 993, how come the same thinking doesn't apply to the 996?

I had a long drive in my car last night and still cant believe how well it drives. I still havnt seen any more boost than .9 bar, which reassures me the turbos are not getting a kicking. Does anyone here have remaps from others see a peak boost difference?
The exhaust is
ing loud as well :-))))The peak boost pressure that you see is also related to the atmosphric conditions/air density. You will see higher boost pressures on colder damp days. The nromal peak boost that I've seen is 0.9-1.0, although I have seen up to 1.1 on the odd occasion very briefly in the afformentioned conditions. My car has a west chip and a miltek exhaust.
