So our office had a big collection for a member of staff leaving the office and I took it on to buy a gift so given what we had collected and that he always had been into decent red wine I opted to buy Chteau Margaux 1995.

I left this at home last night and with the aim of giving it to him tomorrow during the leaving speech.

Anyway got home early and the wife had been cooking as the house was filled with a lovely slow cooker meal - 8 hour slow cooked venison (which I've had before and is superb).

So I said to the wife put your feet up and leave the rest to me - also asked if she wanted a drink she said yes please there is a bit left in a bottle on the work top I'd used in the slow cooker. Given we do have a notable number of bottles in the house nothing out of the ordinary crossed my mind....

Then it hit me .... I walked into picked up a couple of glasses then glanced round for the bottle!!!! Oh yes it was the leaving gift. Too late to do anything about it so I poured the red and have to say it was lovely really lovely.

So the question do I bring this up with her (it was in a gift box) or as clearly it wasn't intentional keep quiet about it and buy something else tomorrow and swallow the hit?
Bloody annoying but guess it will make for a a good laugh at my expense when I give the speech?

Ch Margaux is what all "typical" PHers drink. Won't be found it in the 2 for a tenner section at the local supermarket.

OP needs to decide whether raising the matter with wife will result in:
1) Nagging about having left bottle lying around, and/or
2) Sufficient remorse filthiness to justify mentioning

BTW, did it work well when used for casserole?

Having it a bit later, though the normal version with say £8 ish bottle is superb so its a lot to go do.
I've never drank it before buy the small glass I did have was lovely.

Either way you're £500 down. Jeez...

I'd tell her, but I never do the right thing.

I love stories like this (all sympathies to the OP!).

Some friends I met years ago worked out I _quite_ liked my wine and the husband pipes up one evening "oooh, I have some bottles of some Rothschild stuff at home - bought for me as gift from a supplier years ago. We must try it".

Anyway, so on the night in question; I get to mate's house and he's opened one. (he had 3 originally, one he drank ages back). Lovely it was and very kind of him to share.

I jokingly said, "we may as well open your last bottle then?".

Mate: you're eating it.
Me: What?
Mate: wife put it in the beef bourguignon.
Me: *weeps*

1983 Lafite used as a cooking wine.....

OP - you MUST tell your wife what she has done.

Didn't tell her.

Food was superb - maybe placebo or better meat than usual who knows but it was a very good meal.

Take the hit frown.

In a gentle, "I'm not complaining", way.

Otherwise, she might do it again.

We rarely spend more than £20 on a bottle but if ever in in charge of pricy consumables again it will be put away and te Nrs told not to use it.

Reminds me of the time my wife gave away a bottle of ice wine I had brought back from the US to the school tombola.

Yep.

I've a feeling now sipping a nice 6x or 5 that I might make a comment in passing but in jest. Cannot blame the Mrs wouldn't gain anything and no doubt she would say oh you didn't make it clear enough it wasn't to be used - risk of a weekend of her being pissed off (knowing des wasted that much cash). This I think just laugh it off.

I've blown many multiples of that in Lapdancing clubs in single sitting far too many times and the horses ouch

Don't you usually spend that much on beer on a rugby weekend?

Or just keep one bottle of red + one white in a predetermined place for cooking. Mrs LT steers well clear of the rest... for fear of incidents such as the OP has experienced occurring.

Even if you know nothing about wine it would be hard not to notice it's from 1995...

From the OP's mention about having a decent quantity of wine in the house, and the fact that he went to the effort to track down a Ch Margaux in the first place, that might not have given her a clue.

Yes definitely tell her! Otherwise she'll do it again.

My wife poured a 1982 Langoa Barton into some ghastly stew a few years back. I still hold a grudge.

I assume you've had to replace the bottle?

All is not lost, keep the bottle, use it as a 70's student style candlestick. Who knows, if you make sure the label is always facing the room, she might even twig, one day!
