Am looking (leisurely) to move on from the beloved 944, either to a 968 or 964. have driven a few of both but never a tiptronic. I have heard it said of the 964 that "if you get a tiptronic you didnt really want a 911" as it takes the fun out of the drive. I live in the country with lots of lovely twisty turny hills and bends, and my greatest joy is working up and down the gears on my favourite hairpin hills. I virtually never go near a motorway, rarely sit in traffic and never need to high-speed cruise.

I usually have to travel fairly far to see cars so my question is, is it worth the trip if the car is tiptronic? There are plenty of 968tips about and I suppose the attraction of the 964tip is avoiding all that grief about clutch and flywheel. But are they fun to drive? (compare the 968 manual 0-60 time against the tip which is a full 1.5secs slower, and for the 964 the tip is a second slower). ultimately straight line speed is less important to me than torquey pull and bonkers cornering fun. can you still fling tips around the bends and up the hills and get a buzz?

Not sure about the 964tip, but I would avoid a 968tip. I have put a fair few miles on a 968cab tip and it was lethargic to say the least; not very responsive at all. Great in traffic, but not a sports car in feel, by any means.

I think you will have to try some, no good relying on theory or other peoples opinions. Sounds like having to make trips is going to be unavoidable whatever you do , part of the price for finding a good used Porsche if you live out in under populated areas.
FWIW , there is a technique for hustling tips along , go look in archives at rennlist 964 forum.....

I am a big fan of modern tip cars but I have to say the earlier ones were basically a sluggish Auto. avoid 968 tip and the 911 (964) tip' - only really came in to their own on the 993 and this was only 4 speed. Current locking clutch tip unit in 996TT is a gem.

Q- "ARE EARLY TIPTRONICS ANY FUN?"

A- No

Actually the 964 tip is not 'that' woeful its all down to personal taste you may actually like it, but personally ive never owned an auto & while I have a left leg & my journys dont involve being sat in a slow moving traffic jam all day, I really can't see why I ever would.

I recently chatted to a chap who had owned a 968cab tip, who said it was the automotive equivalent of a gin palace! Iguana is quite right of course - if you have two hands and a left foot then it does beg the question why? the answer, for me, is that in my laborious search for a 968cab there seem to be far more tips than manuals, and it isnt as if they were common cars to begin with. but all good things come to those who wait...

I was being a bit flip about the tip, I know some people who love autos ive just never got it really, I have a mate been into quick cars for years owned lots of interesting stuff but the vast majority of them have been autos- lately things like M3, XKR (surely XKR would be a much better car as a manual?) 996C4 etc never really understood it he lives in the countryside likes a damm good hoon as much as the next petrolhead, & no big daily jams to encounter.

Im also as yet am unconvinced by all that flappy paddle manual box malarky- atho I do like the idea, (maybe with a conventinal foot clutch I warm to 'em more?) but each to their own etc etc.

But just for the record & coz the above is far too sensible for me, 968 tips are indeed w@nk

Excuse the babble- been drinking

I had a 968 cab tip and as long as you used it manually and kept it between 2 and 3 once you were on the move, you can have a lot of fun.

If left in auto mode very relaxing in heavy traffic

Fair play. But 'lot of fun' is quite subjective I suppose. I took out an Integrale Evo yesterday and did a few roundabouts. Now I have had to recalibrate my fun sensors!

That is not a fair comparision, but everything is relative!
