How to protect outriggers
Discussion
My outriggers were knackered so I had them replaced last year. Car lives outside and I've probably done <500 miles since then due to the weather and they are already starting to rust again grrr. Just a few small patches showing through on the outside straight pipes but what looks like some significant rust on the welds where they have been joined on to the main body.
The place I had it done was a long distance from me , I followed some recommendations from PH and TBH I have no desire to let them have it back to fix it as they did 2 jobs for me both of which have had to have remedial work done already.
I'm thinking to get it into somewhere like STR8SIX who have been very good in looking after the car recently and see if they can rub down and recoat the rusting bits. Maybe this time I'll get it waxoyled as its not been done since the new outriggers were fitted. Mind you , I suppose thats a good thing or I wouldnt know what was going on underneath it.
I'm going to borrow a ramp at the local garage next week so I can get under and have a good poke around see how bad things are before I decide what to do next.
Now starting to wish I'd invested the extra for a complete new chassis......

See how to soak the outriggers with waxoil. top and bottom. See EGB post. I believe Chimps also have the wheel arch finger holes just above the frames for access. If you are a TVRCC member I can send pics.

I think I will have to invest in some axle stands and just get in there and sort it out. My worry is that the top of the outriggers will just rust through again though.
I may have to save a bit longer and divert the money from my respray into a complete chassis replacement, get rid of the problem properly !
Maybe I'm panicking about nothing but when I had the front of the car in the air today changing the wheels and saw the rust I had a huge Grrrrr moment.

I would have thought that any self respscting company would have applied some sort of coating to the new metal. Make sure you treat the rust before painting or waxoiling.
If it was only recently done and there has not been to much salt then it is likely to be surface rust, and as long as you nip it in the bud your outriggers should last a feir few years.
Good luck with it

My 2p worth ,the main problem is the outriggers are on the same plane as the wheels, anything thrown up by the wheels will impact onto them they will end up as if they have been grit blasted,
after you have re-painted them might be an idea to look at some type of mud flap/shield to protect them, and maybe a grill to limit the Impact of stones on the tube section ,this will allow water to drain away and allow the tube to dry out after it gets sprayed with water.

I have this sort of arrangement:

Coated with por 15, Also have the common rust/dirt traps (and most other bits I can reach) covered in engine oil. Seems to do the trick.
Girlfriend went to Germany a few months ago with copious amounts of salt, rain and dirt the road, done thousands of miles; she visited over Easter and the chassis is still perfect.
