The temperature gauge largely indicates that the needle can move.

It's digital on the newer gen cars.

Can't you get a digital reading of coolant temperature on the aircon readout panel?

No I can't, I threw the PCM out, I guess that's about the only thing it might be good for !!

Did you throw out the aircon?
Most people just reposition it.

No, this is a 997, just replaced the PCM with a replacement unit.

When I fitted a low temp thermostat to my 996 the temp gauge did not really read any lower. I did read temperatures before and after fitting, via an obd reader and this showed a significant reduction in temperature.

Thanks jkh, didn't think to do that.

That's interesting. The temp reading on the dash then is either very innacurate or there is another reason? I wonder if it doesn't measure the temp at all and maybe just calculates the temp based on various assumptions like time operated?

The gauge on the dash is driven via the engine ECU. The gauge on the dash will stay in the mid point 90°C to stop owners worrying about engine temps. So by about 65-70°C its already showing 90 also the gauge will not start going up again until well after 90°c most likely getting on for 110°c. Engine temps vary quite a bit from stuck in traffic idling on a hot day to cursing down the road yet the gauge doesn't move.

Thanks Matt, didn't know that, thought a simple temp sensor on the engine would be used.

I installed an iobd2 the other day. Pics attached of the iPhone dashboard and also the small device that connects to the obd2 port. The iPhone or ipad connects via Bluetooth or wifi.

That's pretty much what I thought. It's disappointing in one sense but I guess understandable.

Meant to say- it gives pretty much real time data. You can also set alarms for 'coolant over temp'
