A couple of days ago, I came home to find a car had been left outside my house, blocking half of the dropped kerb access to my drive/garage. One wheel was completely trashed, both wing mirrors missing, every other panel dented, and one rear wheel up on the kerb blocking a pavement that is only three feet wide at that point. It did have tax to January 2005, though . Now, I don't have a car in the garage at the moment, but I do have motorbikes, and in order to get them out of the garage I now have to ride along the pavement to turn them round and get them onto the road - inconvenient, possibly illegal, and not ideal for pedestrians.

I reported it to Hounslow police who said they'd send someone round to have a look. I waited three hours to midnight but didn't see any plod come by. The next morning, the car had a note on it saying that the ar had been in an accident the previous evening, the accident had been reported to Chiswick police station, and could the owner call a mobile number (presumably the note was left by the other party to the accident).

Yesterday evening, the car hadn't moved so I called Chiswick police station who didn't have any record of the car (another ). They refused to call the owner as the number was unlisted. I was told that since I didn't have a *car* that was blocked in by the offending vehicle, they couldn't do anything but wold send a car round to look. Surprise, no sign of any such visit.

Can anyone advise me on the best way to get local plod interested and get this car towed? It - er - might have fallen off the pavement by itself, but the same trick won't happen when - er - it mysteriously tries to roll backwards. As a minimum, I want it moved a few feet backwards. Ideally, though, I would like it removed as the last car left on my street in that condition had all the windows smashed, then was torched and I don't fancy a bonfire ten feet from my front door.

Thanks in advance, chaps.

If it mysteriously moves into the middle of a junction, I wonder how quickly it would be towed? At least the owner would suffer some nasty fines and charges. Hmmm. . .

Agreed. Middle of the road would make it a priority...

Ring MR Clutch - Tell them you want the clutch sorting, you are at work with the keys, but if they can pick up the car anyway, you will pop them in on way home. Suggest a pay as you go mobile belonging to someone you don't know.

I've got to get the bastards back somehow.

Is it unlocked? If the tax disc was missing, it'd be crushed before you can say 'crump'...

If it were, I would have moved it before now. A less upright man than I would have considered lobbing a brick through the window.

Oh well, trolley jack time when I get home.

You have made the correct steps by contacting plod. Always note the time and date and officers name/number. You have reported an obstruction, plod as a duty to investigate in a properly proper manner.

Your next step is to make contact with the Proffessional Syandards Department at the local force`s H.Q

If there is no joy there then make contact with the Independant Police Complaints Commision www.ipcc.com

How old is the car?

You may well find that any key will open the drivers door if its more than a few years old.

I was most disturbed to find that a nissan micra key opened my 82 daimler with no problem...and i recently opened up a ten year old datsun with my 8 year old renault key...

Serious suggestion.

Remove the fuel filler cap. It is then a fire hazard and cops have a duty of care to have it removed. This WILL work - I used to get called to loads of these (suspect BiB had a collection of filler caps!)

Thanks all. A couple of pulled muscles later, it's now shifted out of the way. It also turns out to have hit a car a bit further up the road, some good samaritan saw the whole thing and reported it. I followed up last night and finally got someone helpful in Hounslow control room, who looked into it and told me traffic would deal today, by putting a notice of removal on it for 24 hours and then lifting it.
