I have £6k to spend on a car.

It has to be fun, fast, uneconomical (I either push bike or catch the tram to work) and be able to carry 4 adults in some comfort.

Also could do with some reliability lol.

I've thought about some myself, but interested in anything that I may have forgotten about.

These are:

Audi B5 S4 2.7 TT
Audi B6 S4 4.2 V8
BMW E39 M5
Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth (I know lol).

Any comments, alternatives?

Thanks!

was also going to say some kind of R type Jag but not sure how reliable they are as I don't know too much about them.

With a bit of bargaining..... Mitsi Evo VIII?

Current ads mostly in the 7k area but it's a buyers market.. (I think!)

I keep getting tempted by these but the potential big bills keeps putting me off them. I do love them though.

sorry but every car you have suggested will bring you big bills.

You could get a huge bill on anything mentioned, engine rebuild on an Audi V8? New gearbox?

You need to buy right, be prepared to put your hand in your pocket, or just buy an MG ZT and stash some away for repairs.

Thanks for the replies

Running costs and Bills aren't a problem to me, car won't be getting used much except for fun. Not needed for work as ill be biking or getting the tram to work.

I've had an MG ZT, don't want to go there again!

E46 M3 would be nice, but as said, snotter territory.
I think a £6k evo viii might be full of issues?
I haven't even seen any decent evo vi's at that price?

Not sure I'm old enough for a jag yet (32) lol.

Most modern Mercs I have seen seem to be quite rusty

one of these would tick all your boxes, I think theyre fine as they are but a £500 remap gets you into 300 bhp territory, permanent 4 wheel drive makes it stick to the road like st to a blanket

A friend of mine has a nice Evo 6 for sale at £6k and is expecting to get less than that for it. If you are interested in an Evo and look on the MLR, there are plenty of good fives and sixes available for under £6k. If it was me, I'd probably get an E46 M3 for that money. I'm aware it is the bottom end of the market, but provided the bodywork is sound, wielding some spanners doesn't particularly frighten me. As you've already mentioned, an E39 M5 is another great option.

I bought mine because they are supposed to be very reliable compared to rivals. the supercharged 4.2 is very strong, its an evolution of an old engine.

Agree with this. £6k either buys you a snotter of an E46 or E39 but will buy a mint E36 Evo. It might be less exciting a prospect but I think it would be a far more satisfying purchase long term. Alpinas might be worth looking at too for something a little more unusual.

Are Monaro's down to this level now as well? Can't be far off.

I'd be a bit wary of Jags, mate bought a cheapish XK8 and the head gasket went pretty quick, cost a grand, he had a mate whose timing chain tensioners went, similarly big bill. I know you say you're not worried about running costs but some of the choices on here can really empty your pockets!! Do you really want to buy a six grand car that lands you a four figure bill at the drop of a hat? As for the Merc CL500, Id run a mile from any early naughties big engined Merc. Way too much electronics in those cars...maybe an early to mid 90s Merc would be better....

Personally I think the Audis are maybe better choices. I think engine wise they are fairly tough. Either that or one of the Jap choices.
