Hi Folks,

My S1's (with the cosworth 24V engine) speedo isn't doing much, or anything at all really. There was a paired wire with a black plastic thing hanging down underneath the car when I picked it up which looks like it might be related to the issue. I've taken a snap of it and would really appreciate a some help in figuring things out.

Also, I lifted up and back the central console/dash and took a few snaps of the driver side of the gear box/gear lever to see where the speedo sensor goes. There seems to be a bolt with a hole into it higher up, and another potential spot with a piece sticking out lower down. Any ideas?

cheers
Paul

This is the plastic bit that the was attached to the two wires (wires now just wrapped around the chassis)

I think the early cars had cable driven speedo's ? S2 onwards are electronic?

Your photo's look like the reversing light switch...........

Whether cable or electronic the drive or sensor goes in this big hole on the other side.........

I don't know my gearbox's well enough to tell from your photo's but with the Cozzie upgrade is your car still running the standard "Type 9" gearbox ? (reverse - push down, left and forward)

Thanks Phillpot - that makes a lot of sense. I believe it is the standard gearbox (push down, left and forward for reverse).

I will have to look and see what comes out of the back of the speedo and trace it down, but from what you say and your pictures, I have a mechanical speedo and the cable should be connecting to the protruding piece of 2nd photo above (sorry the photos are upside down)

The good side of this is that I'm close to having a reverse light again!

Also thanks to Glenrobbo for resurrecting the other thread. The pics on it help a lot, but indicate that I may have to remove the cap and replace the cable/gear mechanism which could be difficult/impossible to source? Perhaps something attaches to the protruding piece and it is not as 'mullered' as Mikel003003's was?

There are a few other connections I have to put together on this car, but the big things like chassis/engine/gearbox/cooling system/brakes all look good which is nice. Look forward to meeting you all at a TVR get together during the summer and having the opportunity to thank you in person.

Hi Paul,
As Phillpot says, you need ro establish which type of gearbox is fitted to your S.
I have put an earlier topic back on this forum page which may help you identify yours.
The Speedo drive on S1's is taken from a drive gear pinion on the LH ( passenger )
side of the 'box. It is a mechanically driven cable held in place by a circlip, and runs all the way to the back of the instrument on the dash.
If you reach up under the dash to the back of the speedo you should be able to tell if the drive cable is still in place. If it has been removed, you should be able to feel where the cable should enter. This is assuming the speedo hasn't been replaced with a later electronic type.
Hope this is some help, let us know what you find.
Cheers,
Glen.

Paul, you may be lucky & just need a new cable if your pinion is ok.
But looking at your 2nd photo, I would make sure the area is cleaned up first, you do not want grit in your gearbox.
The cable inner is square drive ( I presume, not had mine apart ), and the outer has a circular flange that fits inside the cap ( item 24 ), retained by a circlip. There should also be a seal or gasket between them.

Has the original speedo cable been removed from the car, or is it tie-wrapped to the chassis somewhere out of the way?

The passenger side location of the speedo sensor is blanked off it seems

The speedometer appears to be original (dated 1987 on the back) but lacks a cable!

The cleaned up (a bit) connection on the drivers side.. So would this be the bit where the cable attaches?

I just realised (from rereading/relooking at Glenrobbo's and 003003's stuff) that the cable goes in the driver's side, and is retained (internally?) by a circlip of some sort.

So I need:
- a cable (outer and inner as there doesn't appear to be one coming out of the speedometer on the dash).
- drop the exhaust
- take out the cap on the passenger's side, check the mechanism is working, get a circlip if it isn't there, feed through the speedo cable and put everything back together. Put the cap back in. Fill it back up with oil. Put the exhaust back up
- take the car for a drive

Seems like a lot of work.
Can I just stick the speedo cable in and hope it sneaks past the circlip, then stays on the right side of it (like if the cable had a spear head end)
(or get the MOT with a speedo app from a smart phone stuck on the dashboard)

No Paul,
That is wrong, PM Mikel or myself, so either of us can explain in more detail.
