My socket arrived today... wrong size rolleyes

Firstly, what size it the lambda socket for the Chim and do any of you simply cut and re-join the wires with spade connectors?

I used a box spanner like these

http://www.tooled-up.com/product/draper-6-piece-me...

The connector near the chassis can be dismantled to let the wires pass through. Can't remember the size off hand though I'm afraid.

It's 16 17 mm. I used a small Allen Key to unlock the pins.

The socket size is 17mm

I took the terminals out of the connecting block taking note of the positions of each wire colour in the connector, you can use a plasterboard nail or a football pump connector to slide it down the terminal, this will push in the terminal barb and allow the safe and damage free removal of the terminal, when you come to refit the terminal, it just slides back in and clips into position.

I then used a standard 17mm deep socket and a pair of mole grips to grip the socket and undo

Edit - just saw the post made at the same time as mine, not sure if the Lambdas are different (would be surprised) but mine was definitely 17mm

Cheers for that. I'll disconnect it near the chassis and then take it from there. I have a few box spanners, so hopefully one is a 17mm, otherwise its a trip to Halfrauds. I'm going to make sure I can crack-off all the manifold nuts first!

Just get any old 17mm deep socket and run a grinder down the side to cut a groove for the wires. Only takes 10mins & you'll have the tool for life....

Nice one spend. I've been wavering over which way to do it. Makes perfect sense.

What a bcensoreddy job!!! I did the drivers side first. It has taken me three and a half hours just to get that side out. Had to finish to do the school run. The bolt underneath number 1, what a git. Took me a while to get a method, but I have slim hands, so managed to one hand between the bulkhead and the manifold to push on a ring spanner and the other between 3&5 to lever it upwards. If that bulkhead/ wing was just 5mm wider, I would have got a ratchet on it. What a design, honestly!

I've bought some cutting discs, so will definitely cut a slot on the lower bolt holes. I think that could save me a couple of hours putting them back on.

Is the passenger side easier? I really hope so... had I done it again, I may have considered taking the starter out.

Hi Jamie

Had a blowing manifold, so will replace both gaskets and get them out at the same time... makes sense! Is there any particular method to getting the precats out... the quicker the better!

I used a drill, a chisel, a hammer and a crowbar... And: lots of swearing. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Chris I can use a 14mm S spanner on lower bolt no 3 from the front. No4 lower bolt at the back use a 1/4in drive ratchet with a 9/16 or 14mm cocket. Have done a temporary gasket repair with chemical metal plastic padding. On the 1/2 inch gasket blow out, it works !! It's a pain.

Hi Chris, I did mine in situ, but if you drill several holes through the cat then chisel out a section then repeat, it it will come out in fair sized pieces, just be careful not to punch the chisel/screwdriver into the manifold itself as it may crack it. The first one is the hardest and the second is a piece of wee as you get the knack. Should be simples to man of your calibre. smile

Jamie, you did yours in situ. Then you dropped the Y piece and exhaust to do it? Did you first separate underneath the exhaust from the bottom of the Y piece. This looks a pig of a job to me getting at the big U clamp and then pulling out the exhaust tube from the back end of the Y piece.

All I did was remove the 2 main Exhaust clamps, removed the clamp from the "Y" to the system and the bolt in the block, gave it a good wiggle and it slid out ok and refitted in reverse.
I have seen though that Phazed I believe had to drop the whole system including ARB to remove his.
Dont you just love TVR standardisation. Hope this has helped.
Regarding the clamp at the system it depends on who fitted it and having the fore-thought to put in an accessable position, you only have to slacken the u clamp not fully remove it.

Managed to get the second manifold out. All was going swimmingly until I had to remove number 5. I ended up loosing the exhaust and moving it over, which enabled me just enough room between the exhaust and sump. I then spend ages trying to get it undone as it would not budge (the last one!). Eventually, I managed to get a 22mm ring spanner looped over the end of 9/16, which helped with the leverage. I'm not sure my Y piece will just slide out though. I've undone the clamp and moved it around, but may have to 'waltz' with it a bit more before it budges!
