(Another) reorganisation question

If two people have the same job title and a company only wants one, it's usual for both to receive a consultation letter placing their positions on notice for possible redundancy.

If one of the two has been employed for less than two years, is there any kind of exception to that? A friend has been with the company for less than two years and has received 'the letter', whilst his colleague with ten years' service has not.

The letter refers to people with less than two years service not being due any redundancy payment.

The business should consider whether these is a likelihood of an unfair dismissal claim. If the employee is not eligible and that is the person they want to make redundant then they can short-cut the process.
