Greetings all,

We're looking to put together some 911 Turbo related content and we'd love to have some input from PH owners, including at least one for a PH Carpool for Monday. Do you have a Turbo? Doesn't matter what type - if you'd be up for sharing your ownership experiences with fellow PHers we'd love to hear from you. The Carpool Q&A is pasted in below so if you're up for it just fill out the questions and send it to me with half a dozen pics of so of your car, preferably including one of you with it.

I'm living in hope that we might get a broad spectrum with all the major generations represented but we'll see how we go. If we get an influx I'll run the stories in due course as we always need interesting Carpool stories but you may have to wait a little while for your moment in the sun.

Probably the best first step is to make yourself known in this thread and say which model you have and we can figure things out from that point on. We might want selected quotes from owners of specific cars so we'll get in touch directly off the back of that. Feel free to spread the word if you don't own one yourself but know of someone who does and might be up for it.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing back!

Dan

PH Carpool

Name:
<obvious enough!>

Car:
<obvious enough!>

Owned since:
<obvious enough!>

Previously owned:
<obvious enough!>

  • For the following questions there’s no need to write an essay for each – two or three sentences are enough, more if you’ve got something particular to say but no need to go mad!**
Why I bought it:
<Was it a car you’d always dreamed of owning? Did your dad used to have one? Any random anecdotes about why you chose the car and also a chance to talk about how and where you found it>

What I wish I’d known:
<Opportunity to talk about how you researched the car and what, since buying it, you’ve found out about your car specifically or the model in general. A chance to share some buying tips with people who might be inspired to follow in your footsteps!>

Things I love:
<Kind of following on from ‘Why I bought it’ but write about the things that make ownership worthwhile – the noise it makes when you upshift on the redline, the smell of the leather, taking it out at 6am on a Sunday morning, social meets with other owners, etc>

Things I hate:
<Social meets with other owners?! Niggles and problems that you’ve experienced first hand that might have cropped up, the way it takes ages to de-mist in the morning – whatever!>

Costs:
<How much it costs to run, whether it was easy/difficult/cheap/expensive to insure, parts prices and, where applicable, ease of sourcing them and a chance to namecheck the friendly local garage you’ll shortly be approaching for a discount because you mentioned them on PistonHeads…>

Where I’ve been:
<Memorable trips, trackdays, adventures>

What next?
<Selling it? If so why and what are you going to replace it with? Keeping it? Any planned upgrades or work to do?>

Had a 993 turbo (factory 430bhp upgrade) for 5 years, sold it last year and purchased the "Castello" 996 GT2 featured in Total 911 magazine.

Can't beat the 6-GT2, awesome bit of kit.

997.1 Turbo (Nov 2006) owned for 4 years. Is now on 30k miles, I bought it at 16k.

Basalt black met., manual sports-shift, totally standard apart from I added some "Design 911" exhaust tips to brighten up the rear end (doesn't make it sound any different though).

Had several Porsches before this one and contrary to all the "boring", "worst 997 in the range" type comments you read on here sometimes, it always puts a massive smile on my face and hence, still loving it biggrin

Have done one track day with it and many many road trips with Porsche / Lotus clubs.

No intention of selling. Rest of details / piccies gladly available on request smile

Ok, here's a couple then ;-)

996 Turbo X50, Manthey remap, factory aero kit, Alcon front rotors and GT2 6 pot calipers. I bought it to drive to Monaco last year and loved every mile, even done 3 laps of the track before qualifying on the Saturday. smile

Thanks all, some awesome sounding cars already. And I'm inspired to do something a bit more substantial with this.

Keep them coming and I'll be in touch.

Thanks!

996 turbo cab

Why I bought it:
911 turbo was a a Top Trumps killer card, along with 512BB, Countach and Pantera. Timeless classic and even now a 996 is a proper fast car. The VFM these cars offer right now makes it a no-brainer. Went to RSJ to look at a coupe, came home with a cab.

What I wish I’d known:
That running one doesn't cost the earth, if you buy wisely. Understand that you have to pay, either up front or as you go, and it all becomes a bit easier.

Things I love:
The OhmyGODwhofiredthehorizonatme feeling when I floor it. Still puts a smile on my face, even though my reactions have now caught up with it. The screams the kids let out when they're in the back and I do it. And the everyday usability - a most important quality in a quasi-exotic.

Things I hate:
The exhaust note sounds like a Dyson steroids. It *does" take an age to demist/deice. When it's very cold the windows freeze in place and won't drop when you open the door (I keep forgetting this). Otherwise, nothing.

Costs:
So far (18 months) much cheaper than I would have imagined. Still take it out to Joel for servicing, and everything's good.

Where I’ve been:
Most memorable was a day at Millbrook doing CAT driver training. A real eye opener. Well worth it.

What next?
Hard to say what next. 997.1 turbo cab most likely, with Masser Grancabrio a left field calmer choice.

Photos here.

Low mileage black 930. Not the fastest, newest or best example of a Turbo but its the one for me

Has bags of old school character, low on modern driving comforts and no electronic idiot systems. Its an anologue experience and not for the Ipad generation (their loss)

Is used as Porsche intended for +1000 mile family drives across Europe in the sun and rain on all types of roads.

No problems to date, takes whatever I throw at it and comes back for more, could not ask for anything more from a car.

03 996 turbo, Slate Grey, Factory Aero Kit, Great spec and mint condition

Why I bought it:
The 911 turbo was always the boy hood dream car, it was alway s the car that I said would defiantly own 1 day, and Im so glad that day finally came

What I wish I’d known:
I done my research before buying and wasn't walking into it blind, paid good money for a top motor

Things I love:
The fact that the car is 10 years old, but still looks timeless, will keep up with almost anything on the road and even now after a recent trip to germany will still hit ridiculous speeds with no dramas at all,

Things I hate:
Nothing, the car has been faultless and gets commended for the condition and spec at my OPC everytime I take her in for a service

Costs:
Servicing costs at OPC for which my car wants for nothing, she's well looked after

Where I’ve been:
Havent used the car at all (4000m) in 2 years, but have decided that 2013 is the year of the 911 and she deserved to be shown off, so recently returned from the PCGB factory visit which has to be one of the best experiences in my motoring history to date, cant wait to do it again

What next?
At the moment, there is no next, Im quite happy with my 996tt, and im sure it will be putting a smile on my face for a long time yet

Pics if wanted, no probs
