Boot Strut Specifications
Discussion
Is yours the earlier or later struts as I believe there's a difference.
Physically its exactly the same as a golf boot lid strut but the Golf strut is 500N and the Chim strut is 250N and if you use the Golf strut then it'll try to rip the lid out of its mountings (and do a damn good try - you'll see gaps opening up in a week).
I'm sure I have posted up here previously (about two years ago) what the actual specs are plus the place that I bought mine from for about £30 just to save the hassle when I found that the brand new Golf strut was trying to rip my boot lid off - of course you will have to brave the PH search facilities to try to find it.

Cheers Phil, I found this:

Which helps a bit.
My car is a late build 1996 facelift, my understanding is the struts are all the same throughout production until the point they changed to the vertical opening boot with it's different hinges.
I think this change came around 1999/2000?
It looks like the 250N is definitely the right force, but I also need the length (I'm not with the car right now).
I want to try a strut with the same spec just 30mm longer, I'm currently un-clipping my strut which gives me the extra 30mm clearance I need for the BP straight type LPG nozzle.
This works fine, but a strut that's 30mm longer would be the perfect convenient solution, the hinges themselves certainly have enough travel to allow for the extra lift.
Do you know your length mate?
I heard yours is no more than 3 inches

Mine warped the boot so I`m using a piece of 1 1/4" waste pipe with a V cut in it ..I`m going to try a non hydraulic MGB stay .
They type which just clicks in to lock ..
500N strut (as on the Golf) tries to rip the boot lid out of its mountings ... the "proper" 250N strut doesn't.They type which just clicks in to lock ..
That´s what i found in my boot (just to complete the 1st question):

These dimensions can also be covered by a adjustable CAMLOC GSP008.
But there are several other options via internet.
I´s pretty easy to be replaced by any gas spring with:
250 - 300 Nm force
max 500mm length
10mm ball studs or M6 male threads on both ends
It´s not advisable to exceed 300-350 Nm - this will "morph" the lid and wear down the hinges.
I´m currently looking to import stainless steel gas springs, fitting chim, griff and some other TVRs here in germany.
I think, ther´s no urgent need to put black coloured CAMLOC, VW, FIAT, AUDI spare parts in our alloy and stainless steel covered TVRs. ;-)
Give me a short note - so i can prepare.
Cheers,
