Ideal Running Temp for 500 RV8

According to the Dez Hammel book on the engine- the cooler the better, as power drops as the temperature goes up. It recommend 80'c for a road engine, (cold enrichmanet is turned off at this point) and basically as cool as you can get it for a race engine. This flys in the face of physics however, as the internal combustion engine produces power from the fact that hot / exploding gas causes expansion to push the piston down- so the hotter it is the more expansion and power you get, and dumping this heat out into the cooling system would seem to be a bad idea- but I guess thats where physics and real life just dont add up easily. The RV8 generally does not like to run hot due to issues with the block cracking and liner slip, and starting at 95'c does not give much leeway before it becomes too hot. The reason why later RV8 engines ran hotter was to reduce emmissions, nothing to do with power.

It was 20C outside yesterday and in urban traffic I was reading 95C on the gauge with the TVR fitted sender and 93C on my ECUmate (although I understand that the ECU sender is not particulalry accurate) with fans cutting in regularly. Might be a good idea to put in a lower thermostat and otter switch then.
