What were/are the circumstances leading to your problem Alun?? Any noises, stiffness ??? Have you reverse?

Difficult to analyse without more info?

I would have said it will be the plastic bush in the top of the gearbox, probably fallen out and not the letting the arm move backwards, or the rod at the front that bolts to the bellhousing has somehow got bent

I stopped having tried to select 3rd and 5th various times and finding the stick hitting a brick wall as I tried.

Posted my thread, got in the car, selected reverse, selected 1st and all was well! Driven back the last 35 miles and gearbox feels ok.

Basically I've driven the car for two days around the south coast, pottering along. Hours and hours. All freaking day.

For info,

Engine re built and installed dec 2012.

Gearbox oil changed at same time

Gearbox has always felt a bit tight going into 5th but otherwise ok! Very riffle bolt like.

Used car at an airfield trackday sat and Sunday just gone, did alot of miles, gearbox was great, did miss 5th a couple of times up the straight, I only really used 3rd to 5th and gear changes were solid and fast.

As it stands the gearbox felt perfect after I'd stopped. Before selecting reverse, all gears on odd numbers had like a closed gate. Solid!

Should I talk to engine builder, didn't do it for 10,000 miles before re built engine, installation or a fluke?

I'm super sympathetic to the gears and engine!

Well that was until last Sunday, I never went down hard into second once, just left it in third and carried corner speed instead though.

+1 - we are very fortunate to have experts like Rob dropping in and passing comments/opinion. First thing I would check!

Thanks guys, I need a bible. I know even less about gearboxes than my usual ignorance.

I felt so bad about ringing her neck at the wk end I just had to go back to what she, well me likes best, burbling through old villages and B roads at 40 odd mph allday. I constantly go up the rev range in the gears to get the cam oiled though.

Cheers Al

I'm not sure which I have, april 2000 car 450. W reg!

LT 77 I reckon, is the R380 the Rover box. I've answered my own question, I really should listen up more.

Baretti, I'd appreciate a look at said pics of the bush replacement if you can do it.

It's time for me to start working on the car myself, this sounds like a fustrating way to start, lol.

I've cleaned every inch of the thing, at least I won't get dirty hands anymore.

Alun, you have a T5 box. Only 93 & early 94 used the LT77 - the R380 was never "officially" used in a TVR, but has/can be substituted in place of a LT 77.

In additional to roll-over bar/wheels/tyres/seat, I may also have a bible, if you want them?

Jeez I have a T 5 box, I know that, I've had a bit to much Tvr bass note.

Tell you what Peter I'll see if I can find a cross country route all the way to yours. Joke. Thanks I might do that. I'll pm you.

Trev, thanks, it's just timing! Well that and a flat bank account! I'll see what i can do!

No Trevor I'm trying to stay away from tracks I turn into some nutter I dont recognise anymore! Lol .

If I got those wheels off you it would spell outrage. I need to buy another Chim. trackday only, I'd love it.

I'm coming to the conclusion my cars to posh to trackday!

I'm a racer, if I see a Skooby in front of me I will risk god knows what to catch up, On track only of course!

I change my mind everyday regarding what to do with the car though.

Sorry for confusing things Alun. I have a TVR and a Land Rover and they both have LT77 boxes. The replacement for the LT77 in the LR Defender was the R380

Here is the thread on my LT77 gear lever bush problem. Which I would have sworn was 4 perhaps 5 years ago. How time flies!
