Evening my fellow 996tt owners. I had the oil prsssure indicator faulty warning occur at the weekend. If this has happened to any of you, how big a job is this to rectify? Idea of approximate cost to rectify would be great, as well.

Very common for the oil pressure sender to fail apparently, mine throws a fault message briefly maybe 1 in 10 trips. Clean or replace I've been told, and doesn't take too long and not too expensive. I'll be getting mine looked at in the next month hopefully together with a pre-summer health check.

You just need a new oil pressure sender (around £40 - part number 996 606 203 02). Its a bit of a pain to fit due to its location but its no more than an hour's job at most - you could DIY it if handy with a spanner.

Thanks. I will see if it is covered by the warranty I got with the car. Otherwise I'll tell the Mrs to look the other way when I use her card to pay for the bill.

Or just leave it, my current and previous 996's have both done this from time to time and is not really an issue.

OPC quoted me around £145 to replace the sensor a couple of weeks ago, but this was during a service which apparently makes it cheaper (then again these are OPC prices).

Just check that one of the two wires have not come off the sendor, or they re loose. Get some long pointed nose pliers, nip the conection up a little on the wire and push back on sendor.

If still does not work, then replace the sendor.

I'm not sure its sensible to leave it as the oil pressure switch is off the same sender unit - and if it happens to be faulty also you'd have no indication of losing all pressure...for a £100 fix its not worth putting off.

Mine flicks off for a second or 2 and then back on, maybe once every 1000 miles. If it is very regular then maybe worth fixing.

If you really lose oil pressure the red warning light at bottom of dash will light up anyway, so you will soon know about it (so I was told by a Porsche mechanic who had the same view as me, ie not worth bothering to replace).

Just to make the original poster and others aware the info qouted is wrong on this job, on a 996 c2 c4 c4s yes this can be done fairly easily where as on a 996 turbo as per the question asked by the OP the job to change this is an entirely different kettle of fish and certainly takes a good bit longer than a hour to do, sits quite near the location of the dv valves and quite a few components have to be stripped to access.

I picked the kids up from school yesterday and with the car up to temperature, I didn't get the error at all. Oil pressure ranged from 3.5-5bar depending on gear, speed etc. If this is normal....then I'll see what happens over the next few outings before taking it to a garage.

'Mr Freefall'...Old thread I know but this has just happened on my 996 4s, I just wondered if you (or anybody) could put me in the direction of exactly where the sender unit is so I can check these wires that you mention?

Thank you ever so much in advance..

Pip1968, that is very helpful thank you very much. Do you or anybody know what the 'brown' plug is near it in this video. For some reason when I located the oil pressure sensor with this video I noticed my brown plug was unplugged!?
