More help if ya don't mind Gentlemen.. Having problems starting her up, it seems to be the starter, but not 100%
Sometimes it starts no problem, but half the time it just clicks with a slight whining noise, when it does start its pretty sweet.
Don't wanna buys new starter and find its one thing more simple?

Based upon your description, I would reckon your problem is with the local heavy duty wiring or the starter motor solenoid, but first check the battery.
To be sure the battery is good, measure the voltage whilst cranking - it should not fall below about 9.5 volts.
In your case cranking seems to be missing, so you might put the voltmeter across the thick lead from battery positive to the stud on the starter to see how much voltage drop there is when trying cranking, and, like wise across the earth strap from chassis/battery negative to engine, for a similar test.
Any dropped voltages is wasted energy and is not getting to the starter motor.
Either way, clean all the heavy duty connections and add Vaseline for future protection.
If the battery is good and clearing any suspect/bad connections does not solve the problem then try this clean-up of the solenoid innards,

- After cleaning all the heavy wiring/earth connections it may be the starter solenoid is faulty so remove the complete starter motor for inspection and repair.
- If you choose to dismantle the starter motor itself, check the brushes and bearings, cleaning the commutator and re-assembling, all as specified by an appropriate Haynes manual or workshop manual (say SD1), then turn attention to the solenoid.
- With it separated from the motor and after removing the two end cover retaining screws, using a large hot iron de-solder the tag connections whilst at the same time easing off the end cover, exposing within, the coil connecting wires and the large copper starter contacts.
- They will be dirty and pitted, a suitable case for treatment with a small rotary wire cleaning brush and glass-paper until they are all bright and shiny.
- Check the coil resistance with an ohm-meter to see if it meets workshop manual spec.
- Re-assemble dry (without any lubrication to the internal contacts), wires re- soldered to their outside connecting tags and the unit re-married to the starter motor as per the book.
- Test the assembled unit on a bench battery to see if all is OK before re-fitting it to the car.
- The starting performance will never have been so good.
Well that certainly gives me something to look at, I was thinking Battery, because I fully charged it a few weeks ago and it fired instantly, you may say well there is your answer, but it then didn't start for a while then starred again, without any recharge....perhaps luck?, my father in law has a very nice 79 Aston Martin V8 Volante, 7ltr!
And he was saying unless his battery is tip top it won't start.
I'm charging the battery over night to see what happens, if no improvement I will by process of elimination go through your pointers.
Cheers guys, I have to say, gettin on pistonheads was a good move very friendly and great advice.

Rik,
In the USA we handle it the lazy way.
1. Remove battery and take it to any auto parts dealer; they test it for free. If it's bad, you need a new one. If it's good, clean terminals.
2. Remove the starter motor and take it to any auto parts dealer; they test it for free. If it's bad, you need a new one. If it's good, clean terminals. (Am I repeating myself?)
Since it sometimes starts, it is quite likely to be a wiring fault - start with the big earth wire probably direct from battery to starter. I don't know why it is usually the earth not the positive.
Other fun places to check are the ignition switch and any fancy modules.
Or you can do it the professional way as described by HonestJohnToo.
Good Luck,
Wilf.

Hmmmm ya see in the UK they wanna charge ya!
Will definatly check the earth lead though, thats a good easy start, of coarse it will be the last thing I try no matter what order I go in!
Frustrating, cus I'm totally addicted to the sound of the V8, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms!
Cheers Wilf

Starter Motor Solenoid Repair!
http://www.wedgeneering.co.uk/TVR%20390SE%20p14.ht...Well the story goes like this, I told the auto electricians it was a Lucas starter, so they ordered the solenoid accordingly,£15.00 plus vat.
Turns out its a Bosch, so I took the starter in with the solenoid attached to be sure.
He rings me up about 2hrs later saying it was full of water.. He stripped it, replaced what needed replacing new contacts, fittings etc. and says call it straight for the £15.00 I paid for the Lucas solenoid.
Top bunch of blokes down there.
I'm feeing I've, done well!
